Part-time work schedule preference (60% time)
« on: October 16, 2018, 12:44:21 PM »
I am submitting a request soon to go to 60% part time. I'd work 3 full 8hr days each week, but I'm not sure which 2 days to take off. Pay, PTO accrual, and Holidays are all pro-rated.

I definitely want to make sure it's a 4 day weekend, so that leaves 3 options:
  • Mon-Wed (Thurs-Sun off)
  • Tues-Thurs (Fri-Mon off)
  • Wed-Fri(Sat-Tues offf)

I'm leaning towards option 1. It seems like it's just personal preference, but not sure if there's any pros/cons to any of them that I can't think of?

I've been on 60% time for the past two years. I work Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. I find that only being gone for one business day at a time is helpful when others need to discuss something with you. Three-day weekends plus a mid-week day off is quite nice.

ohhhh, that sounds fun!!!

If it were me, I would set it up not to work Mondays because that is the dreariest office day -- people tend to be grumpy. Just not a fun day to partake in.

I don't know which I'd prefer: working Tue-Wed-Thu or working Wed-Thu-Fri. I think I'd pick Tue-Wed-Thu. That's the one that would feel most "right" to  me.

I don't think there are any wrong answers to this question. Sounds like a great schedule whatever you pick.

I daydream about working PT quite a bit. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to make it a reality just yet.  So yeah, I'm always running scenarios of which days I would take off, how I would schedule mini-vacations, etc.  And I always wondered about Mondays--which is the day we most often have national/big holidays.  Wouldn't it make sense to work Mondays?  You get the Monday holidays and for those weeks you benefit from additional day off?  Am I right or am I overthinking this in my daydreams?

I'm doing 3 day consecutive weeks and it's great.

As for which days, go with what makes sense at your workplace. The only day you're definitely in is Wednesday, so if you have a lot of meetings that are hard to move, or a work culture that means work gets done more early or late in the week, then schedule to be around for those. Meetings can be rescheduled, but it's a pain to fit it in with everybody. If there are pushes to get projects finished that typically happen later in the week, you'll look like you aren't pulling weight if you're not around on Friday to participate. Or like you're going against culture if you're pushing hard early in the week.

If you're lucky enough not to have such worries, it doesn't really matter unless you have a preference. The only possible difference I can think of is if you make a bunch of trips to a bank, as they have lots of Monday holidays, and you won't be able to use your newly found free time to go there on off hours on those holidays.
