Title: Which Dell Inspiron to buy?!
Post by: Geographer on February 26, 2019, 01:39:30 PM
After 8 years, my Dell Inspiron (core i5 processor) is crapping out on me. A couple years ago I replaced the battery and charger, but now the keyboard intermittently stops working. Repairs would cost $200!

That being said, I'm hoping to buy a new Dell Inspiron for under $500. They have the Inspiron 15 3000 with 7th gen core i5 processor for $450, and Inspiron 15 5000 with 8th gen core i3 processor for $500. Is either of these a drastically better deal, or is the 5000 worth the extra $50?

I also considered going the refurbed Dell latitude route, but I don't think I need anything too powerful. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated!

You could replace the keyboard yourself for much less than $200!  It’s really easy to do, and while it’s open you can clean out all the dust that will be in there!

I think I bought my Inspiron 9400 in 2005 and it’s still going strong, so I’m sure yours has plenty of life left in it!

EDIT: it could of course be your keyboard driver software that is the problem.  I converted to Linux years ago and the software replacement cured any intermittent faults that had been creeping in.
