How to sell fancy jewelry/ gifts
« on: December 17, 2013, 08:47:14 AM »
Hi,
As I grew up, my parents bought me 2 really fancy necklaces, gold and diamonds, for 2 Christmas gifts.  I was a tomboy, so I pretty much hated them.   I am guessing, but I think they are worth $400-$700 a piece.

Also, a few years ago, my parents went to Europe and bought be the ugliest wine glass set (comes with a tray and decanter: because I have a lot of decanting needs) from Florence.  They paid $5,000 for it.  I almost had a heart attack when I found out, because this thing is UGLY!  What were they thinking!

I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I hate these gifts and have finally decided that I don't want to store them anymore and plan to sell them.

I have never sold anything like this.  Any suggestions on how to go about it?

For the jewelry, have it appraised and then try to sell it on Etsy. The folks on Etsy seem to have the most appreciation for fine older jewelry pieces that you won't get from your local shop or via Craigslist or Ebay.

I will look into that.

Does anyone know about pawn shops or those places that buy gold on the corners of questionable neighborhoods?  I assume that these places won't give you a good deal.

For those places, figure 7 cents on the dollar if you're lucky.

Some private jewelry shops will also either buy or consign jewelry for you.

The gold you should be able to sell relatively easily through a few different sources. The ugly wine glasses maybe e-Bay (not for thousands of dollars though..), the diamond jewelry you are probably out of luck, unless you can find someone with bad taste.. or maybe a pawn/consignment shop.

Does the wine set have any kind of maker's mark or signature on it?   Or did it come with some kind of documentation about the artist or company that produced it?  There are collectors out there who focus on specific producers/creators and you can google around to see if you can find a collector's forum or message board that caters to them.

At the very least, you may be able to see what other people on Ebay and Etsy are selling them for.  If it is that valuable, it may be worth it to take it to an appraiser or auction house.

Do we know that they are ugly instead of OP simply not being into jewellery?

The jewelry is very classic and beautiful.  I just don't like necklaces.

The wine glasses come with paperwork and signatures, so they are worth something.

Oh, I just clumped someone who would want jewelry in general (ooh shiny things), and especially diamonds (http://blog.priceonomics.com/post/45768546804/) into bad taste in general for convenience :)

Not your taste, I had originally made an offhand remark about finding someone with bad taste to buy it from you :)
I drop it and apologize.

Depending on your tax situation and local laws, you could consider donating the unsellable stuff and taking the deduction.

You would probably have to be at a high tax bracket for that to make sense

If you want to sell them on Etsy, they must be at least 20 years old and you must categorize them as vintage.  Only handmade, vintage, or supplies may be sold on etsy.

I sold a diamond and gold ring on kijiji (which is like craigslist).

I had originally taken it to a jewelry store, where they offered me $10. I sold it on kijiji for $50. :)
