Which Blogs/Podcasts Are Changing Your Life?
« on: December 10, 2013, 05:43:21 PM »
Other than MMM, what blogs do you read that make you really think or drive you to change your ways for the better? I'm talking about the kind of site you stumble across then have to read all the posts.

From my side, I offer up the following (some of these have already been referenced by MMM):

Blogs:
http://monevator.com/ - UK-based investment blog
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/ - Primal/paleo health and nutrition
http://physics.ucsd.edu/do-the-math/ - The science behind energy use and generation
http://www.badscience.net/ - How scientific research is really done (hint: skewed)

Podcasts (via itunes):
More or Less - humourous look at the numbers in the news and how they are derived (or not)
Freakonomics - sometimes less than scientific but always entertaining economics blog

Looking at my list above, I can see that a little humour goes a long way to make something entertaining :)

Econtalk is my all-time favorite: http://www.econtalk.org/. Always interesting. I always learn something.

I love David at Raptitude.  http://www.raptitude.com. If I could only subscribe to one blog...this one would be it. I love it more than even MMM because I am already frugal and have been living simply for years and reading MMM just reinforces choices I've already made.  I am challenged and motivated to think differently by Raptitude constantly.  As an example, read his post a few weeks ago about "the Four Horsemen of Writers Block". His obstacle is with writing but the concepts are useful for any creative process or with a habit that you'd like to change.

I really like Freakonomics and Planet Money podcasts. I listen to quite a few others on Stitcher radio app, but none very intelligent.

I'm looking forward to trying some of these other ones listed though...

Podscasts:
www.thesurvivalpodcast: Has some really good information especially if you are into growing your own vegetables.  Some of the stuff gets a little crazy, but he's a pretty well reasoned libertarian.
www.savagelovecast: Funny, interesting, sad, and disturbing all in one podcast.  How can you go wrong?

Others I listen to are Planet Money, Freakanomics, Marketplace: Money, Radiolab

Blogs:
http://ana-white.com/momplex: A couple in alaska building a Duplex for their parents.  Also has great plans for building your own furniture.
www.breakingmuscle.com: hit or miss fitness/crossfit/weightlifting/powerlifting/strongman articles, not really a bog I guess.
www.jdroth.com: founder of get rich slowly, he has some good stuff he posts
www.getrichslowly.com:  Although it has been lackluster for the past few years, I still check in periodically to see whats up.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Can't believe I didn't know about EconTalk - it will become a permanent fixture on my walk to walk list.

Geez, I'm subscribed to over 100 personal-finance and lifestyle blogs, and sometimes it's all broccoli wrapped in cauliflower with brussels sprouts on the side.  So I'm going to mention life-changing blogs that I read when I want a break.

The two I really enjoy are:
Broadside:  http://blogs.militarytimes.com/broadside (and its companion "Greenside")
and
"What If?" by the xkcd creator:  http://what-if.xkcd.com/

A couple of things about "What If?", just like xkcd:
1.  Randall Munroe puts metatext in most of his graphics, so hover the cursor over them to read the extra punchline.  Same with the Wikipedia-style citations-- you have to click on them to read the snark.
2.  He's done about 75 "What If?" essays by now, and they're all pretty thoughtful, so you'll have to pace yourself.  I recommend reading one a day (or 3-4 per week) from the beginning until you catch up with the feed.

I also enjoy reading TheWirecutter product reviews.  By the time you get to the 10th in-depth paragraph, you realize that you really didn't need that thing anyway.  Brian Lam is a tech geek & writer who made his pile in Silicon Valley, moved to Hawaii like the rest of that demographic, and then realized he wanted to do more than just surf all day.

If you live with or know someone dealing with Alzheimer's, then try Bob DeMarco's "Alzheimer's Reading Room".  (http://www.alzheimersreadingroom.com/)  It's also life-changing in a "better coping" way.
