Where would you go?
« on: June 18, 2017, 08:12:10 PM »
My wife and I have a $800 Delta voucher to use by October 1st. We are planning on going somewhere from August 26th - September 2nd.
We also have credit card points that could cover about $100 per night hotel room for the entire trip.
We live in the midwest...

So my question is.. where would you go within the USA for a one week trip?
We did Colorado last year and it was amazing. But haven't really been anywhere else as a couple.
We are currently looking at Dallas and Phoenix. What other options are there?
Mostly looking to relax by water/pool and see some cool things.

Trying to be as frugal as possible of course.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I cannot recommend going anywhere in the Southwest during that period, which is the hottest, likely 100+ temps in Dallas and Phoenix.

Seattle is usually beautiful that time of year, as is Toronto. I have never been to either of the best known Portland's, but late summer would be ideal for either.

If the voucher covers a flight to Anchorage, AK I'd head there. The weather is still very reasonable that time of year for someone from the lower 48, the majority of the summer tourists and mosquitoes will be gone, and the sun is still up over half the day. There are still a lot of outdoors activities to do, hiking, halibut fishing, scenic drives at that time of year. Not so much the relax by the pool, but there are plenty of cool things to see, Denali being one of them and only about three hours from Anchorage (you can see the mountain from Anchorage on a clear day).

If you thought Colorado was amazing prepare to have that dialed up to 11 in Alaska. Pretty much every large land mammal in America is there and can kill you. It is awesome.

Yeah somewhere in the North during that time period is where I would head.  Vancover, Portland, Toronto

Vegas. Flights and hotel are generally pretty cheap--but there are a lot of nice, scenic destination nearby that most visitors ignore.

Not a good time for Phoenix. That is prime monsoon season. 100+ degrees and windy with dust and lightning storms.

Lake Tahoe or the Florida Panhandle beaches.  Still lovely weather, but many children have already gone back to school, so neither area is crowded.

I have noticed that a lot of people like Lake Tahoe.

What airport do you fly into for Lake Tahoe? Also I noticed most of the hotel are expensive.. does anyone have recommendations on where to stay while out there?

You'll fly into Reno airport.

We were in Reno and Tahoe during that exact same time last year (Labor Day weekend).  The weather was fantastic.  Warm during the day but not too hot, and chilly in the evenings/early mornings.

As far as where to stay, you could stay in Reno which is less expensive than Tahoe, and still be a very short drive to the mountains.  You can stay in South Reno close to Mt Rose Highway and literally be 23 minutes from hiking trailheads in the mountains.  Or you can stay in one of the downtown casinos for CHEAP and still only be 30 minutes.  We did that once and it was fun, but I haven't stayed in downtown for many years so I don't know if that's still a good option.

But I really like Stoic's Alaska idea too. :D
