Where to move phone to?
« on: October 06, 2017, 03:34:00 PM »
My work now provides me a shiny phone (not too excited, that means they can call me. :)). I can do pretty much anything I want on it, but it's still my employers.

I don't want to get rid of my regular cell phone, but I'd like to reduce it's cost as much as I can and hang onto the number. The phone # is used for two factor texts, etc, which I don't want to tie to my employer's phone in the event I quit/etc.

Any suggestions on where to move my phone number to, off an AT&T contract? Cheapest call plan; probably wouldn't even need data since it can be on wifi all the time.

Thanks!

Twigby starts at $9/mo.

Coverage isn't great, but serviceable for a spare phone in most major metro areas. Are you just trying to preserve your phone number? If so a cheapo dumb phone might be your best bet for getting a decent rate.

You potentially could move your number to Google Voice and have that forwarded to your work phone.

I'm not sure if you can still do this, but it might be useful for you.

Apologies for the late reply.

I want to keep the phone/number, primarily because I use it for two-factor for some of my financial institutions that currently offer text only. I don't know if I want to tie my ability to log into my bank to my employer's phone that they could cancel at any time (I have a great job, and good stability, but you never know).

Move it to Lyca Mobile (they have a Pay as you go plan not advertised; order the sim, then put $$ on it , and it's like 5c per min/txt)
we've been on Lyca Mobile for years.

Go Red Pocket and TPO have plans starting at $10/mo as well
