in June 2011 I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and took a 3 year contract for data in order to get a good price on the device. Since then, my work has purchased me a laptop, and I find I just don't use the tablet for anything except surfing the internet - and as I posted in another thread, the irony of reading Mr. Money Mustache on a device that is costing me $20+ monthly cannot be borne!
To cancel my contract would cost me $20 for each month left on the contract - $400.
I understand that I could try to sell the tablet on Craigslist, kijiji, etc, or even give it away, with the proviso that the buyer would assume the remainder of the contract with Rogers.
I'm wondering if anyone else has done something like this and has some advice to give me about things to do, things to watch out for, etc? I've never sold anything on Craigslist or similar sites, but for this much money, it seems like it would be worthwhile giving it a try.
Here's what I've already thought of - I should dig around to see if I still have the box, manuals, etc. I should get information from Rogers of the details of the contract to include in the ad - for example, how much data for $20 vs $35 for unlimited if you go over that amount. Check with Rogers for the current price of the device and the cover. And meet the buyer at a Rogers store to do the exchange, so that I can ensure that the assumption of the contract is taken care of properly, and receive documentation of same. This also takes care of arranging a safe place to meet a stranger.
Any advice? I'd be particularly interested whether people think I should start off trying to get a small amount toward the cost of the device, or just jump right in with advertising that the device is FREE in exchange for taking over the contract.
