Where to buy non-counterfeit electronics?
« on: January 23, 2022, 03:51:59 PM »
I'm looking for a Surface Laptop (1st gen) charger (model 1800), but it's pretty much impossible to find legitimate sellers these days. Amazon, eBay, and even New Egg (which used to be reputable) all have "GENUINE OEM GUARANTEED" chargers that clearly look (and are priced) like cheap knockoffs (although they still have 5 stars 🙄).

Unfortunately, Microsoft and Best Buy (still reputable?) no longer seem to carry this charger, so I thought I'd ask here:

Where do you shop for electronics (online) that isn't flooded with third party sellers of counterfeit items?

(Note: in this case, there might be a newer charger that's compatible available from Microsoft, but I'd like the same model, if at all possible.)

Might need to buy a used one if you insist on that model.

A check of the website for a local big-box store states that the newer versions of the chargers are compatible with the first generation Surface Laptop.

Yeah, they used to sell the old model for $50, but now try only sell the fancy new one for $100+, which seems excessive for a charger for a 5 (?) year old computer.

And for the record: I’m aware of the irony of not wanting to spend $$$ but also wanting something (actually) genuine.

Edit to add: normally I buy used stuff off eBay, but it’s basically turned into Amazon (where I can’t find anything legitimate anymore).

Also, just for context, I’m looking for genuine parts because I’ve had bad luck with cheap knockoffs (either them breaking or, worse, breaking other stuff). Cheapo chargers tend to overheat too.

Try eBay but filter for just used items. The third party versions usually sold as new in my experience. Searching use should get you past them.

I actually tried that before posting here and I still end up with pages of the same obviously fake “OEM” chargers :/

I've gone through 3 OEM Surface chargers. So I think they are crap. I've actually had decent success with the USBC->Surface cords paired with a 60W power delivery charging brick. I have gone through two cords, but they're only like $15 not $60+ for the OEM charger. So it's a little more palatable when they break.
