Where to advertise when selling car
« on: October 17, 2022, 05:32:03 PM »
Is Facebook now where you guys list your car when selling it?  I feel like it used to be Craigslist, but looking at Craigslist now seems like there aren't very many cars for sale (maybe my memory isn't perfect here...)

Or just go for the paid sites like Autotrader for more quality views?

It’s going to depend a bit on your local area, what people are most using there.  In my old own, everyone used an online classifieds page that was specific for that town, and hardly anything else, then I moved and discovered everyone in my new area used Facebook Marketplace above everything else, so that’s my go-to at the moment

Lately, Car Max, Carvana, etc. have been offering such high prices for used cars that the concentration of scammers is notable on CL & FB.

Facebook has mostly supplanted Craigslist for stuff under ~$10k. For more expensive or niche vehicles I'd go straight to auction sites or the CarMax/Carvana types that will buy directly from you with far less hassle.

Carvana/etc prices have plummeted (at least for my car) over the last ~4 months.  Private party and dealer listings are about the same, but CarbuyerUSA and Carvana offers have dropped by $10-15k.

That might still be preferable to dealing with the general public and flakes on Marketplace or Craigslist

I'll deal with a fair amount of hassle for $10k!

If you can actually get that in the private seller's market then sure. But Carvana, etc have a pretty decent impact on the market overall. If they're offering significantly less that's probably a sign that the market overall is cooling and private party sales may not be an exception. I'm just saying that most private buyers won't have more than a few thousand in funds at a given time. And people that are paying tens of thousands for a used vehicle may feel more secure dealing with a dealer than a private seller. So for higher value used vehicles, just unloading quickly may be better than dealing with hassles for months on end trying to maximize selling price in a falling market.

Why limit yourself to one venue? I posted my car on Craigslist, FB marketplace, and Autotrader. There was a fee for the latter, but it comes with a Carfax report that prospective buyers can download directly from your ad for free. I actually included a link to the Autotrader ad in the ads on the other venues.

Yes, there are lots of scammers, especially on CL, but be aware of their tricks (do some googling to find out what they're up to these days), don't do anything stupid (such as accept any other payment than cash) and you'll be fine. The guy who bought my car last year saw the ad on CL.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
