Where should we live? (north suburbs of Chicago)
« on: September 17, 2016, 11:04:45 AM »
This is a question I've spent a lot of time thinking about, but I'm not satisfied with the options I've come up with. I work in Lake Forest IL, where the median home price is $800K, and my wife works in Winnetka IL, where the median home price is $1.2M. Nothing in the area seems to be affordable. We currently rent an apartment in Chicago and both take the same train to work, but it's a long commute.

Where would be the most mustachian place to live? We'd like to buy a house/condo soon, but the prices near where we each work are crazy. We like riding the train to work, but would also be up for biking to work. We hate car commuting, but that is a potential option if it's necessary and easy. Thanks a lot!

Do you mean where should you live in Chicago, or are you proposing relocating elsewhere and finding new jobs? I wasn't quite clear on that from your post.

I'd ditch Chicago if I had employment options elsewhere, but that's just me.

I am originally from the northwest suburbs of Chicago about 25 minutes away from Lake Forest, IL. Most of my friends basically work their ass off, just to pay the taxes. I have seen property taxes in Libertyville around 4%. It's kind of depressing every time I go back and visit. I would never live in Lake Forest. What do you get for the money? A Lake Forest address and that's about it.

If you could make similar money in a different state, I would move.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
