Delta Airlines - Are you kidding me? A bunch of BS
« on: April 23, 2018, 05:30:11 PM »
This airline...wow.

I have a voucher from the hurricane last year and am rebooking a flight. They said by phone when I received the voucher, that in the future, I HAVE to call in to make the order with the voucher.

I speak with a nice women to book the flight, she goes through the flight options (which I am reviewing at the same time), and informs me that to use a voucher, I CANNOT choose economy (cheapest tickets) and HAVE to either select the next level up OR First Class to use the voucher... I tell her the voucher email says nothing about this.

She says that is their rule and starts to process the order, she comes back and tries to take payment with a number $50 HIGHER per person than what she just quoted me (and I can see on my computer). I ask her about this, she says oh there must be an error, I'll have to get my Manager. I wait on hold for 10 minutes and she comes back and right as she starts to talk (I don't know if she hit the wrong button or something), but I get transferred to a 1 question survey about the call, then the line hangs up.

I call back and the system recognizes me and says there is a "Greater than 2 hour wait to speak to a representative". I call other customer service numbers, same thing. I did NOT receive email confirmation, so am not waiting on a "callback" 2+ hours from now.

Am I crazy or this a bunch of BS? It feels like they pay their employees on some sort of commission for how much more they can try to upcharge customers! The bit about not being able to use vouchers on economy seats and then the system hanging up on me. Come on! Anyone else experience this with this airline?

All airlines suck, I wish everyone would boycott them until they and the TSA get their shit together.

The proper thing to do here is to blow up their Twitter feed.

Are they telling you no economy, or no basic economy?  My understanding is basic economy can't be purchased with them (but honestly- I don't know why anyone would ever buy basic economy...)

I fly quite a bit and I have found Delta to be above and beyond better than the other major airlines.  Including when I have dealt with customer service.  Although I have never been issued or used a voucher.  I am not an "elite" level flyer yet so I do not receive priority with customer service either.  I doubt the upsell had anything to do with the customer service agent.  She was probably just putting in your flight request into a screen and telling you what it said.

Bummer that they hung up on you.  Usually when I lose connection with customer service they will try to call me back.

I would not be surprised if the purchaser is getting hit with a surcharge for booking on the phone rather than online.  I would expect it to be less than $25 per person, though, not $50.

I thought you need to go to every news organization and complain you were fined for doing what you are explicitly told you will be fined for....ie bringing fruit through customs.

What's the difference between economy and basic economy? That's a new one to me.  I've heard of economy and economy plus or economy premium but I haven't heard of anything below economy.

For Delta it's relatively new.  It's moderately cheaper.  You can't pick your seat until after you check in and you can't make changes to your flights.

You also cannot have a bag in the overhead bin.  And even if you have status you are not eligible for any upgrades.

That's not true.  You are boarding last so chances are good there is no room in the overhead, but they gate check it for free.

Thanks for the correction. They are more generous than United and American (for domestic flights) where it is not allowed.   Both also charge to gate check if you bring one with you.

I like Delta the best of the main three airlines, but they rarely fly the routes I need for work.

Wow. I haven't been super impressed with Delta, now I'm really scared of the other two! But I'm pissed off because a year ago I signed up for one of their credit cards, and a few months later they raised the point fee to fly from my airport from 5,500 to 30,000+ or so. Alaska and foreign airlines it is then.

I don't know about Delta, but I can say that among at least some other airlines upcharges are the name of the game.  I expect it is universal.  And no, it's not the employee that you're talk to that's trying to do this to you.  I'm not aware of any of them that get commission.  However, they do have to apply these airline rules if they want to keep their jobs...

I flew commercial once after 9/11.  The TSA security theater was so disgusting that I've not flown commercial since.  I have a love/hate relationship with air travel.  I love the concept, but the current state of the industry (both due to their own as well as government actions) is repulsive to me.  :-(
