Title: Where do you buy tires?
Post by: uspsfanalan on May 29, 2013, 07:46:12 PM
My wife's honda fit needs 4 new tires. I live in NC and am considering Costco, Discount Tires and Firestone. I've used Firestone in the past and not had bad experiences with their tires. I would be willing to install the tires on my own car but my wife wouldn't let me mess with her baby. :) So I'm just considering places that would do the install for us.

Where do you buy your tires? Thanks.

I just take the free tires people leave on their cars in the parking lot.

JK, I think Costco and America's/Discount Tire are both good choices.

I buy Michelins at Costco.

Costco is often but not always the cheapest.  Figure out what size, brand, and type and shop the installation places on-line.  I have had Sears, Costco, the local Goodyear dealer, and a local independent all be the cheapest on the Michelins and Bridgestones we have used on the Hondas and Toyotas.  Lots of places will price match or beat with a written estimate, which you can get from some tire retailers on-line.

I used TireRack.com the last time I needed new tires. I didn't shop around too much (just compared vs. the quote the local repair shop gave me) but it was pretty cheap.

Ditto for tirerack.

The shops around here actually buy from tirerack and mark them up.  Last time I checked paying $15/tire for mount/balance was still cheaper through tirerack -- but that will probably vary by tire.

The last set I ordered after 3pm and had them on my porch by noon the next day.

Just wanted to check back and report what I was able to find. I got 4 Michelin Defender tires rated for 90,000 miles from Tirerack.com for $425 with shipping, the installation is $80 at one of the approved installers near my house. There was also a $70 rebate as well - without rebate total will come to $505 after rebate it should be $435. The same tires at Costco came to $472 pretax. Now I just hope these tires don't suck. They were highly rated on all of the websites I checked.
