when you post your expenses do you include debt payments?
« on: August 02, 2014, 10:26:42 AM »

I'm curious, when I read various blogs or posts where people post how much they live off of I usually see the obvious categories, rent:food:internet:health insurance:travel:cell, but is student loans or other debt left out? what about donations?

I post everything -donations, gifts, etc. If I have something really private/personal, as I did just once since the start of my Journal, I post the spending under "Confidential", but I still list the amount. I have no debt.

ETA: I post most expenses according to my primary *intention* in the disbursement. So, if I give $10 to a cause, to an individual I don't know, or to support a member of my extended family who is sick, it will usually go under "Gift" or "Donations/Helping", while a birthday gift goes under "Birthdays". On the other hand, I attend 12 Step meetings, and the donations I make there I list under "Healing". If I pay for a new friend's coffee (rare), I would likely put that under my "Circle Building" category. I also loan through Kiva, but because the amount is static and simply circulates, there is no money leaving my budget, so nothing shows for that. So, all new "costs" of gifts and donations are presented, but not always explicitly labelled as such. They are labelled, instead, according to the reason I gave it.

A lot of Mustachians don't have debt, since it's a hair on fire emergency. It's priority #1. Donations have historically been controversial in the forums, so not everyone donates money.
