I made the mistake of taking my car to Pep Boys instead of trying learn and fix it myself.   Long story short, I had them replace a electronic steering sensor and steering motor.   When I got the car back today I had a message on my dashboard that the airbag needed service.   I told the manager and the mechanic about it.   The mechanic first claimed that the warning was there prior to the servicing, but the warning is very obvious that I would of noticed it.   The mechanic then claimed (why would he change his story if he claimed the warning was already there?) it could because they put a non oem steering sensor/motor that could be causing the warning.   I finally convinced them to look at it again for free but they said I would have to pay if additional work need to be done.

What are my rights if they don't fix the problem they caused?   Is it legal/ethical/possible to get my credit card company to chargeback the $1,200 I spent?

Take it to the corporate level and write a letter to the BBB. Credit card company should be your last resort.

What car are we talking about? That is some dealer pricing there... for $1200 I would have taken your car to the dealer, not Pep Boys. Use them for tires and oil changes.

Demand they fix it or you'll take them to court? Not sure how you can prove the light wasn't on though. Its your word against theirs.

What kind of car indeed?  That's plain crazy! 
Forget BBB- they're useless.
File a complaint with your credit card and then file a small claims suit.  Get your ducks in a row and prepare for battle.
Likely, when Pep Boy's legal dept. gets the complaint, they will contact you to resolve.

I'm not sure exactly what you can do about it, as far as getting them to do competent work.  Complain, and complain loudly, but in the end, realize that they might not have the expertise to be able to fix everything correctly.

However, I hope you use this as motivation to find a real mechanic.  Get on Yelp or use your Google-fu and find a local shop that will communicate clearly with you and take pride in their work.  All of those chain shops, Pep Boys, Midas, Firestone, Aamco, etc., all of them are terrible places to take your car.  They prey on the uninformed, charge high prices, and usually combine that with poor workmanship.

A little more info would be good. Year / make / model / issue / resolution. I wouldn't wage a war if I figured out they just knocked a connector loose (although yes, I agree, they should get it right without you having to do anything).
