Rapid Relocation
« on: November 16, 2015, 10:07:41 AM »
We currently live in downtown DC, and feel increasingly less safe by the day.  Just this morning there was a police standoff a block a way with a crazy person which the police barricaded 4 block area.  The thing is, it is one of the safer neighborhoods in DC, and I still don't feel safe anymore.  I take the subway to work, and now there is specific ISIS threat against DC.. We've been talking about relocating for awhile, but this might be the last straw.

I'd like some thoughts on whether this is an overreaction (probably), and how we can relocate quickly and efficiently?  We rent and have 10 months left on the lease.  We have FU money to hold us over, although I wouldn't like to use it for more than a month since it is ultimately earmarked for a down payment.  I have the ability to work remotely sometimes but not 100%.  I am close to a big promotion and would hate to leave and miss out.  If I went 100% remote, my career path would grind to a halt.  There is nothing about her job keeping her around other than an easily replaceable paycheck.

Thoughts or ideas?

You are over-reacting.

Part of being an MMM follower is not get caught up in "Herd mentality".. If you do you will sell all your stocks the moment there is a big market pullback for example.

The chances of you/family being actually injured in an ISIS attack is miniscule. Yes police standoffs and crazy people do happen more in large cities, but its still a very small risk, unless of course you live in a particularly bad neighborhood.

If you don't, my advice would be to take a deep breath and make smart financial choices, don't run for the hills as it will be very expensive.
