When does your vanguard IRA investment returns update?
« on: January 20, 2015, 08:13:30 PM »
Recently opened a traditional IRA brokerage account with vanguard, and maxed it for 2014.  Within days it showed a loss of approximately $50. My question is how often does the investment update throughout the month?

That's about a 0.9% loss. The market has swung up to 1.7% on any given day this year and has been known to go up or down several percentage points several times a year depending on the day, so depending on what you invested in that's going to happen a lot.

I don't have a vanguard account but my guess is they update after the close every day and probably have some way to see live what is happening.

Ok thanks. Maybe the percentages are so small I haven't noticed it move since the approximate 0.9% loss. It is the 2050 target retirement fund btw.

Maybe.... your online account should have a view of your investments by "unrealized gain/loss" look for that.

Just viewing the chart, depending on when you bought it, you could have easily lost $50. https://www.google.com/finance?client=ob&q=MUTF:VFIFX

On the other hand, I don' t know how vanguard fees work. Look in your account for any recent transactions too.

If you look at your account, and it says "view balances by owner," then look to the right and it has the word "value" bolded.  Put your cursor on top of the word "value" and it will tell you how the value is reflected on your current balance.

To give a direct answer, mutual fund values ("NAV", for "net asset value") are updated once a day, and that new value is shown in your Vanguard account every day.

This is slightly different than individual stocks or ETFs, where the value is updated constantly (like, every second) during open market trading hours. I don't own any ETFs, so I'm not sure how frequently Vanguard updates their value in your account, but I'm sure it's also once a day at a maximum.

So you can check every day if you want. Or just look at a 3rd-party's finance website (like the Google Finance link dividendman provided) to track the value over time.

But don't do that, because you're invested for the long-term, and it's a waste of time and mental energy. The change in value on any particular day is meaningless.
