Cheapest housing for a single mid-30s guy in Chicago?
« on: December 01, 2023, 04:26:51 PM »
I don't want or need a house. I just need two bedrooms, a bathroom, and lots of natural light. I have roughly $100k saved up. What's the MMM way to live as a single guy in Chicago? Thanks.

If you have no other criteria to guide you, I like Pilsen and Logan Square a lot.

Chicago is a pretty affordable city.

Have you priced buying a home with more bedrooms and renting out the extras to roommates?

Chicago's a big area. Big city, plus the surrounding area. Where specifically do you need to be? IE, where's work? Because downtown is different from midtown is different from south suburbs is different from west and north and north west. And those of us in the area will have different ideas depending on what we know.

My partner and I rented a 2bd/1 bath apartment on the far north side (5800N) from 2015 - 2021... our rent started at 1150 and went up to 1250 by the end of our time there. It was extremely affordable, had beautiful windows, etc.

We opted to move eventually because we did want to buy a house. What are your goals? Do you want to own a condo (you mention you don't want a house)? Are you fine with renting? Are you considering new areas of Chicago in which to live? What kind of help are you looking for here?

That's a pretty good budget considering Chicago is not that expensive compared to other biggies.
