What to do with my old cell phone?
« on: June 15, 2013, 01:36:15 PM »
I'm switching my cell phone carrier to Ting for a $15/month plan (plus taxes and fees) from my $77.66/mo US Cellular plan.  I currently have a Samsung Mesmerize that I purchased in either late 2010 or early 2011.  It's a subsidized device and wasn't useable with Ting.  So, I bought a used Samsung Galaxy II (a step up from my phone, but still pretty "old" as there's a IV out there now) for $265.  My savings in monthly fees will have this paid for by the end of the year.

Is there anything I can do with the Mesmerize?  Most resale places won't even take it, and from what I've seen, I don't think I could sell it for more than $25, even if anyone was willing to buy it.

You can keep using it as a "tablet" of sorts. It will jsut be an android device with no cellular connection. If you use it wifi you can use it as a remote control to certain things, play games, mess around, etc. Otherwise, just sell it for the $25.

Keep it around or give it to an older relative for emergency calling. You can still call 911 without paying for service.

I'd buy it if I didn't already have an older phone :D

Anyways, I find plenty of uses for them. I end up using them as a MP3 player/GPS for relatives that don't have one or a smartphone. I mean I can download music to it (or use FM radio on a phone that has it) when I'm walking trails. The GPS is great too incase I get lost.

And then there's the camera... I place a few around the house and use them to check things. IE did I forget to shut garage doors? I just connect to the phone and check it out on camera. I don't have the door set to remote shut, but I can call someone to close it for me.

At worst, if it uses a sim card, use it as an international phone? When you travel, buy a local sim card and use the phone. Not too much to worry about if it is lost/stolen/broken if otherwise you are using a newer/ more expensive phone
