Made a loaf of bread in the bread machine to go with leftover chicken vegetable soup for dinner. Gotta love that 58 minute Quick Loaf cycle!

Got a free sample of medicine for child who saw the doctor today. It's a puffer with 60 doses so it will be more than enough to see us through this asthma-type illness.

Drank copious amounts of tea.

Turned off the furnace for the afternoon while everyone else is out.

Husband combined 3 errands with picking up a child from music lessons.

Making money, rather than saving it, but I'm very excited :)

We just arranged a lodger for our guest suite!  She's an old friend of mine who will be with us for a trial basis for the next 3 weeks, then vacating while we need the room for family (she has a house-sitting gig lined up to coincide), and then hopefully staying for 2015!

Yay :)  We've never had a formal lodger/boarder/roommate before (have had long-term guests, though), so it will be a new experience for us.  Hopefully a good one, and even if it turns out to be short rather than long term, any extra money coming in will be put straight to work.

My car needed to visit the mechanic which is near where the Hub works so he drove my car to work today, left it and walked the last mile to work.  Will pick it up the same way.  The man is a frugal god.

Son has a good friend who is a mechanic by trade and they were fixing my son's breaks on his car in our garage and it only cost my son the parts. Nice friend!

I did the same thing with hair elastics. I was all out and had them on my grocery list. Then I found one on an end table, and I had my kids help me look for some in other places around the house and we found 11!! Ridiculous! Crossed it off my grocery list :-)

Made Thanksgiving soup!

Blob of mashed potatoes and gravy in pan.  Add enough almond milk to get a good chowder consistency.  Fill it with shredded turkey and leftover vegetables.  Season.  Heat.  Eat.

Today I rode my bike to work, and I stopped at the public library on the way home. I made a batch of hot cocoa mix to have on hand. The only money I spent today was on the coin laundry.

:)   I knew I had to change something when a boyfriend mimicked my only words in my morning routine as a mumbled, flustered, "Where's my scrunchie?!?!?" Took me a good nine months to come up with a solution, lol. And happily, there are only four doors in my wee house.

I wrap mine around the handle of my hairbrush. I always brush my hair when I take the elastic out, and likewise, always brush it when I put it up. And if I don't brush it, I at least know the elastics are in the top drawer of my bathroom vanity around the handle of my brush. :)

Fixed my headlight last night with a $17 dollar bulb instead of the likely $100+ it would have cost me to take it to a shop.

This may not seem like a big deal, because I originally thought it would be a very simple fix. I've changed the entire tail light assembly before, I didn't think a headlight would be any harder, but it is because the engine is in the way. It took a few days and a couple frustrated tries. I shattered a few plastic rivets, and the assembly wasn't coming out as easily as it should have, but I kept at it and succeeded. :D

Also I made an appointment to get some rims for my winter tires before I get them put on the car. It costs a little more now, but I won't have to pay an outrageous $140 twice a year to switch them. I'll be able to do it myself.

Yummy mug of tea to keep me warm.

Cancelled $10/month online newspaper subscription....FINALLY! I was holding out on this one as I really do enjoy the paper, but there's so much content free online now, that I really could no longer justify it.

Keeping mini-lights off on the Christmas tree during the day. This is a change for us from pre-MMM years.

I made the dough for no-knead bread last night and will cook it this evening.  This not only gives me fresh bread but will heat the family room with the heat from the oven.

That is, I'll get fresh bread if it works.  I have tried this recipe a few times before and haven't had good success.  Hope it is better this time.

Sounds interesting, do you have a recipe for it?

Personal achievements:
- Made tofu from storebought soymilk, tasted really good (in my homemade Miso soup :P) and convinced DW that I can buy beans next time for cheaper and even more yummie tofu.
- Payed families health insurance for 2015 in full and got a 2% discount.
- Switched to a "freemium" mobile operator, pay one-time subscription of 25 euros for 100 minutes, texts and MB's which is perpetually renewed each month without additional cost. Going over that limit is extra and very costly too (but I won't since I can monitor my usage super easy). DW wants to move too but she had some "accidents" in the past by not monitoring her usage enough :(
Everything I say is my personal opinion which is based on my subjective experience.

I  remarked to my neighbor that her ice plant was attracting bees that I desperately need in the garden.  She offered to let me have as many cuttings as I wanted. Turns out it's part of the succulent family and roots super easy. Not a ton saved but I am having a great time. Come on spring!

Um, you want to know how to make Miso soup or how to make stock from which to make Miso soup? I used store bought paste with this recipe: http://steamykitchen.com/106-simple-10-minute-miso-soup.html

I made a super easy lunch version with seaweed, handmade Tofu and spring-onion (I tried fried and fermented seaweed sushi sheets which worked pretty well). Great for lunch or as dinner after a heavy lunch.

I'm guessing you want a recipe for the paste though, sorry to disappoint. Handmade is not-from-a-can for me, I don't always make everything from scratch (I use premade stock for soup too).

Lol, that one is easy.

Follow this tutorial with unsweetened(!!!) Soy milk: http://youtu.be/O9Lo4kFuwy0
Skip to 2:45 after the eggshell part.

I used 30cc of vinager with half an eggshell (crushed shell and let it sit for 60 minutes before filtering) for calcium and half a liter of soy milk. Pressed for 15 minutes after curdling which gave beautifully soft yet slightly firm tofu, much better then premade tofu.

This was enough tofu for 1 evening meal (I'm a medium sized eater) about 200 grams I  think.

Finally took the time to fill out the paperwork to claim $870 in medical expenses I had paid out of pocket.  I have been very busy and put it off for several weeks.  Technically I didn't save money, but I did start the process of getting my money back.

I had breakfast and coffee at a work meeting (my compensation for having to get there early).

Today was our homeschool group's Christmas Pageant.  I needed to take food for the kids to eat between the final rehearsal and the play, and a plate of finger-food for the shared supper afterwards.

I had been planning on swinging past our local bakery on the way and picking up a premade pizza and something else, BUT the thought of entering those expenses into my little expense tracking app made me feel sad.

So instead, I raided the pantry and made savoury pinwheel scones, using up some leftover meatloaf from last night in the process.

So that's a WIN for expense tracking already.  Possibly $4 worth of ingredients used (at most), versus maybe $20+ of stuff from the bakery.  And there are 4 pinwheels left for the kids to eat for lunch tomorrow :)

Volunteered yesterday at a bouldering competition at my climbing gym. It was fun, we got free lunch, and a $25 discount for the month on my climbing gym membership. Win-win. :)

Also I mended some clothes and made a casserole for the upcoming week.

I've been eyeballing buffets/sideboards on Craigslist for a while looking for something to replace our generic World Market one.  Yesterday I took the top off of it, which was a blonde finish that was looking the worse for wear, sanded it down, stained it darker and paste-waxed it.  Today I'll pick up some nicer knobs to replace the ones that are on there, so ~$15 vs. a few hundred for a new, used replacement.

never buying paper towels again- I use these and wash in the washer.  Doesn't waste paper and works way better anyways.  Can't believe I didn't think of it sooner!  (make sure you don't was anything else in same load they bleed like crazy)

Since I have a milestone birthday coming up in January, and since I have already hit my deductible for medical for this year, I scheduled a full physical for next Monday.  When I scheduled it, they suggested I go to the lab at the hospital this week for the blood draw so they could get the results by my appointment.  I went in today and they said my insurance probably wouldn't pay for the Vitamin D screening, so I could have the test run and see if they do or not, and then pay if they don't.  Maybe the physicians on here will disagree, but I decided to not risk $71.68.  Since I live in the Pacific NW, and since I work inside, I am pretty sure I am Vitamin D deficient naturally, but I am taking my daily multivitamin which says it has 100% of D3.

Made a homemade Birthday card for my uncle.  I do this often and people always love them since they are personalized with images from magazines.  I just use leftover cardstock/paper, markers, and a glue stick.  The magazines I get free one way or another and i just cut out pictures and save them for certain people.  Like the one of Kiss i got out of ...either Entertainment Weekly or AARP magazine for my uncle (I'd saved it a couple months so I forget).  It made his night!  Gives me something to do if I'm watching a show.

A month ago I bought some Bosch plugs for my car and put them in about two weeks later.  Shortly after that the car started to run rough, multiple misfire codes, etc.  Bought some NGK plugs and replaced the plugs.  Car runs very nicely.  I was going to eat the cost of the first plugs, but a friend said to take them back to O'Reilly's and get my money back.

Long story shorter, O'Reilly's took back the plugs on warranty and gave me a full refund of $32+.  WIN!

Leftovers for dinner with a loaf of warm bread from the bread machine.

Made brownies out of the pre made mixes I had done up.

Left the heat off all day. The oven actually warmed the house up quite nicely.

Son (!!) reminded me to unplug my laptop after it finished charging.

Last night:

I realized my roommate's car was parked behind mine in the driveway.  Instead of asking him to move it, I walked to the grocery store to get green onions when I realized I forgot to get them over the weekend for my homemade kimchi.

I then made homemade kimchi for the first time.  We'll see if it comes out tasting any good.

Started a batch of kefir.

Made 8 servings of chili in the pressure cooker, then plopped them into pint-sized mason jars and froze them all except one (my lunch today).

I made four chocolate coconut milk banana breakfast shakes and stashed them in the fridge.

"Used up" some brown rice pasta to clear out the cabinet.  Yes, after all that fancy food prep, I had pasta for dinner.  I enjoyed it.

Breakfast was amazing homemade Italian bread, toasted, with homemade apple cider jelly. Then I started making enchiladas for dinner by cooking presoaked beans stashed in the freezer. I'll incorporate some leftovers into the filling, as well as some homemade canned salsa. Lunch will be leftover chick pea and potato curry.

One of the things I'm trying to work on is not wasting any food.  I meal planned for the week, but we seem to not be eating at the rate I thought we would, so I've redone the meal plan.  This way I'll use up the fresh food before it goes bad and manage to keep some of the canned and frozen stuff for later.

Also, all of my entertainment lately is either library-based, having friends over for tea and dessert, or cycling.  Inexpensive and yet seemingly so luxurious.

Lately I've:

~Staved off a former co-worker from pitching her new "nutrition shakes" sales program at me.
~Last week at least 3 suppers were freezer leftovers.
~Decreased the thermostat by another 1 degrees.
~Christmas gift shopping will include at least 5 coupons.
~This month's grocery shopping will include approximately $40 in coupons
~Will reuse a Christmas tin from last year for a cookie exchange.
~Mended my favorite pair of black slacks.
~Asked DH to glue the bottom of one of my loose shoe sole.
~Am going to pair my dentist cleaning appointment 60 miles away with Christmas shopping afterwards.
~Made my own cafe mocha at home
~Assembled 10 work outfits, some in new combos, to somewhat satisfy my new work wardrobe wants.
~Shopped my HBA bought-on-sale-with-coupons stockpile in lieu of having to buy some items at full price later on this week.
~Analyzed, trimmed, and finalized my Christmas list to fit my budget.

Got sick(er) at work, finished urgent tasks, came home and put my still-frozen lunch leftovers back in the freezer. However, I will probably ask my husband to buy me some canned soup on his way home, because he forgot to put the leftover turkey stew I thought I'd eat in the freezer while I was on a business trip this weekend, and I think it's probably too old for safety now.

Editing to add he didn't call before he drove home, but he did dig me out a can of chicken soup from the bottom of the pantry, so all is good there.

Not so money saving: it's back to the doctor tomorrow, as I have fever and swollen red and white spotty hurty throat... I suspect strep.

Forgot to put the furnace back on last night before bed (have been turning it off in the day) and it was remarkably fine in here:-)

Turning off lights constantly! (Kids these days!)

Did laundry in cold water. Will hang to dry.

Keeping lists of gifts so I don't overbuy (this has definitely been my tendency in the past!)

Way back in the mists of time, when I started my job 8 1/2 years ago, I signed up for the basic life insurance, and then promptly forgot about it. In those pre-MMM days, I didn't think much about it, and I can't remember if I even paid attention to the amount of the benefit.

Just realized today that I've been paying $18 per paycheck for this insurance, which (I just checked) pays out a bit more than my yearly salary. I purchased far more life insurance, for less money, about five years ago.

So, OK, facepunch me for not paying attention to this. But I cancelled it today! So that's a savings of about $470 per year.

Made a loaf of bread in the bread machine. Still amazes me how with 2 minutes of assembly time, I can have a piping hot loaf of bread ready in 58 minutes! Served it with a little cheddar cheese for lunch and it was delicious. I should really start another loaf for accompanying dinner.

Furnace off during the day. Its been quite mild here.

Realized i didn't have time to cook the bacon this morning that I thought i was going to put in a BLT. Figured i was just going to have to buy my lunch and eat the loss (so to speak)

Then remembered there was some leftover steak in the fridge my SO brought home from a company dinner last night. put that on top of leftover washed lettuce and cucumbers from yesterdays sandwich, threw in some cheese, and scrabbled together a salad to bring in to work in 30 seconds!

Just ground left over roast pork shoulder to make a double batch of Chinese steamed buns.  The dough is rising as we speak.  I am experimenting with half the normal amount of yeast.  I have all day and if it rises slowly I will cook them at 2:00 p.m. instead of 11:00 a.m.

Tonight's pizza dough is in the fridge, resting. Toppings are Costco cheese, homemade sauce from canned CSA tomatoes, random left-over bits from this week's dinners, and on-sale pepperoni.

We have dessert once a week, and I'm about to go make some cookies with the same flavors as dark chocolate Almond Joys, the favorite chocolate bar of the tmac household. I'm seriously excited about it. I might be able to buy a cheap-o dessert for the same cost, but I can't imagine it would taste as good and would contain lots of processed crap. I'll also tuck away a tin of them to give my dad for Christmas.

Today, I did our Christmas shopping online. Our kids know that they each have a $100 budget, so their lists were very specific and reasonable. My son even included suggestions for free things we could do for him (help with various projects), instead of things to buy. So far, we're under budget and they'll get any remaining funds in cash, deposited into the Bank of Mom.

Walked 2 times to the eye dr - 15 minutes each way.  Had to go 2 times, since the staff found some additional information I had to look at.  However that 1 hour of walking goes towards my exercise time.  So I was frugal and healthy.

Took a hospital run shuttle to the dr instead of public transportation.

Baked 2 cheescakes at the same time in the oven.  1 for an office party (used what I had instead of contributing money for the lunch,) and the 2nd is in the freezer ready for an additional Christmas party later in the month.

Took home some office christmas party leftovers, so I'll got lunch all prepared for a few days.  All I have to do is heat up.  Someone bought a panettone, but didn't even open it to share.  So at the end during clean up, no one else wanted it, so I took it.  I was going to store to buy one, but now I got one for free, for basically helping clean up.  I know it's not MMM to buy a panettone, but I just love the stuff.

Mended the sleeve of my pjs.

These are all small things, but it helps me appreciate the small things and keeps me on MMM track.

Turned leftover turkey into a half-gallon of stock. Canned it. Froze the leftovers for soup or turkey salad, whatever else in the future. Participated in the LendingClub IPO, made $1200. Promptly stuck the gains to round out my IRA for the year. Walked to Rockefeller center with Pitagirl instead of taking the subway (though we took the subway back... It was about 25 blocks). Pitagirl turned off the heat when she left to walk around NYC with me. And is reading 'your money or your life' :).

Did not buy a real Christmas tree today.

We have a very small fake tree that has done us just fine for the last 8 years.  I am very tempted to get a large, real tree now that we have a house with room for it, but the $20 is better left in the bank account.

Drove past the tree-seller twice, though.  And even with chanting "not going to buy this, not going to buy this, not going to buy this", I still asked DD to have a look and see how much they were charging.

But I kept driving.  yay me.

For a Christmas party today I'm bringing homemade catnip toys (from homegrown catnip) and homemade dog treats as gifts for everyone.  Also, as food I'm making garlic mashed potatoes, delicious and inexpensive to make!

This was not completely intentional, but I slept in instead of going to church a few towns over and then going out to breakfast. Wouldn't want to do this every week, but it saved me about $11.50 including tolls, parking meter, a gallon of gas, coffee and a breakfast sandwich. It's a bit of a lose-win, though,  since I would've liked to have been there for Mass and also would've enjoyed breakfast. I made coffee at home with my cat and enjoyed some homemade cornbread instead.

I just updated my Upromise account with my current information. In 12 years, I've accumulated $0.96, and when the account reaches $10, the money can be transferred to a student. I was saving for my little sister, but she's already a sophomore in college. At this rate, I should change it to save for nieces who are 7 and 4. My information had been mostly out of date, though, so maybe I'll save more in the future.

Cleaned my gutters.  Messy work, takes me about 2 hours.  Luckily my roof has a very gradual pitch so I can splay myself on top of it and crawl down the line with very little risk of falling (much safer than being on a ladder, I think -- I never feel unsafe or at risk in this position).  But still, it takes a while and it was pretty cold out, so I'm patting myself on the back now.  Saved $150 doing it myself today --  I tend to clean them twice a year, fall and spring.  Just got to it a little late this year.

I'm fitting a door this weekend, so I needed some bits for it (handles, latch and such like). I was about to pick them up at a big hardware store, when I remembered that I had store credit from a refund at a smaller store nearby. So I bought the bits there instead.

Half the price, and $0 out of pocket. Not bad.

I love my job, but this week a certain someone made a few really awful decisions that will probably get him fired and I'm the one who had to rat him out and provide evidence.  I'm having guilt, lots of anger, disbelief, and a few other things.

My usual remedy for an awful stretch at work used to be going to get my hair dyed and cut.

Today I did both myself.  I used the $3 box of dye (which will last just fine because I use baking soda and vinegar to wash my hair) and the pony tail method of cutting.

I'm now a really angry shade of burgundy with some nice layers.  And I do feel a bit better.
