Took advantage of some casino promotions (I live in NJ) and ended up with about $25 I didn't have before.

Used a drying rack to dry clothes (saved $3.50). Not enough racks, so I'd probably need to buy 2 more (3 total) to handle the amount of laundry we have in an economical way.

Bought stuff at Target using the Red card (which I had to sign up for) and saved 5% (about $20 since the shopping trip was large).

I dry the same way.  I found an *awesome* drying rack at the local indoor flea market for about $20 that holds over a week's worth of laundry for me.  It's made of plasticoated metal, folds flat, and is really sturdy when set up.  It looks a lot like this one: http://www.hayneedle.com/product/moerman88346collapsiblemetaldryingrack.cfm

It was at the quintessential Asian Import and Dollar Stuff booth but way in the back.  I'm pretty sure this is typically a "locals in the know" item as it wasn't out in prominent display like other items.  Might be worth the hunt if you are a buy-it-once-forever kind of shopper like me.

We're going to Peru in the spring, so I figured I'd start early on gear shopping to take advantage of black Friday sales and all that.  But before I did that, I checked Craigslist and scored a brand new with tags, super fancy $300+ Gregory backpack that will hold all my gear for the 2 week trip for $75.  I fully expected to spend twice that much for a decent pack on sale.

Haven't ordered food in, even though we've been sorely tempted, since my foot surgery Friday. Today is Tuesday. I'm surprised and pleased that my family has risen to the occasion and gotten meals on the table in spite of the adversity!

Eating my way through my pantry, this month, in anticipation of doing more spendy shopping for Thanksgiving dinner.

I realized I've been neglecting my stockpile of ready-to-eat soups.  Instead of throwing out two cans that were almost a year past their "use by" date, I risked it and brought a can to work for lunch.  Happy to say that I didn't notice much of a difference.  :-)

Started bringing lunch to work.

If too busy to prep lunch, I buy side dishes from corporate cafeteria -- sweet potato fries and grilled veggies for $1.75. They let me put chili sauce on my fries for free and some cheese and onion from salad bard --- voila chili fries! Save at least $5 per day on lunch.

Had leftovers for lunch.  Super great catered food from last week's "America" concert.  I've still got enough in the freezer for a week's worth of free meals.

Baked my own challah bread as the bakery didn't have any. Too delicious though. It's all gone in one day! But I think I will make it a weekly practice.
If I get good at it, I can make an extra loaf and donate it.

Completely failed to phone a washing repair man today, after my machine broke down last night.

BUT, the good thing about forgetting, is that while I was bailing out all the water from it this evening I remembered it had come with a 3month warranty, despite being second hand, when we bought it 2 1/2 months ago!  Yay for something finally breaking down just inside the warranty period, instead of just outside it!

(and no, the warranty didn't cost extra at the time)

Cooked the last of my enormous 19 cent/lb. cabbage.  It's hard for two people to use up a 15 lb. cabbage but I did it.  Well, except for a dab of coleslaw that is in the fridge that we will eat tomorrow.

We did this on a house in eastern WA using the "heat shrink" plastic.  Saved a bunch of money in heating that winter.  Hope yours works as well!

We do this every year because we have stupid leaky crank out windows.  We've lived here for 15 years and there is a very noticeable difference when I don't do this both in comfort levels AND the gas bill (we save an average of $600 per year based on what the bill jumps to when I don't get it done).  I also save the plastic from the larger windows to reuse on the smaller ones until it gets too small to reuse...save about half the cost of plastic that way.  We find there is wayyyy more tape per package than we need.  I do believe that 2015 will finally be the year we replace these stupid things.

We've installed a kitty door in one of our sliding glass doors, and it's single pane and has caused some air leaks. So last night we sealed up the leaks and installed bubble wrap over the single pane.

Dry air is doing a number on my skin and hair but I was resisting buying a humidifier (because of cost but also bringing more plastic clutter into the house). Did a search for alternatives and saw a great idea of hanging damp towels in the bedroom to dry. The towels need to dry anyway and I get them out of the bathroom which doesn't need moisture and into the bedroom which does.

Yep.  I do my laundry during off peak hours to save on my electric bill and then divide the clothing amongst two drying racks in the house.  Also, I hang towels to dry on some old toddler pants hangers in various dry areas of the house.  When combined with having the house set lower than "room temperature," dry air is not such a problem.

So I woke up this morning on a sunny Saturday, made coffee and put some raisin-bran type cereal in a bowl and then realized I was out of milk.  Drat, I really wanted some cereal!

Today is my grocery shopping day so I am almost out of everything.  I did a quick inventory of the pantry and fridge--eggs, but no bread for toast, drat again!  Nothing but veggies and meat in the freezer.  I glared at my leftover Swedish meatballs and mashed potatoes in the fridge as that is where the rest of the milk went last night.

But then I see that I have everything for pumpkin bread.  The rest of the house is asleep, so I turn on some classical music and get to work.  It took me a while as I haven't used the from scratch recipe for quite some time.  But I just took the loaf out and it looks/smells wonderful.

I feel like a total badass!

I just made 3 cups of Sambal Oelek (chile paste) out of leftover homegrown chiles.  It's about 3x as hot as the store bought stuff, was essentially free (just some garlic, sugar, white vinegar added) but will replace $15 worth of the store bought stuff, and reduce packaging waste too.

I had a bunch of Thai and 5-Color chiles and some random jalapenos and habaneros - maybe a quart with the stems cut off?  Put in a pot with ~cup of white vinegar, brought to a boil, added maybe 1T salt, a dash of fish sauce, 6 large cloves of garlic, and 3-4 T sugar, cooked for a few minutes, then into the blender until it was the consistency I wanted.  Oh, I threw in a couple pieces of pickled ginger I had laying around, too.  If there were tamer palates in our house, I probably would have gone back in with about 50% bell pepper to take the heat down because this stuff is INTENSE, but I always eat like 3 T of Sambal Oelek when we have stirfry.

Did some Christmas shopping:

-got son floor mats for his new-to-him 1997 Honda Civic on clearance for $6 a piece.
-got another son a socket set for 50% off -- he's always using ours to tinker with his car -- and an iron on sale (he's "thinking" about moving out soon - 20 years old)

I love getting practical gifts! Feel like I really scored today!

Also, picked up a sturdy clothes drying rack (to add to my Ikea wall drying racks) that was on sale.

So yes, I actually had to spend money to save money.

I got two free drying racks using some reward points I got at work and so dried a load of laundry instead of using the dryer.

Meal prepped food for the week to deter eating out.

Used a 50% off coupon I found on the back of my Kroger receipt to buy a month's worth of e-juice for vaping.

Went to the library, got a library card, and checked out 5 books.

Went to Costco to check out what it was all about and price checked a lot of staples. I'm going to wait to check if my work offers a discount for the membership but the savings on toilet paper and chicken alone will pay for the $55 fee. They didn't post the price for gas but the lines to fuel up were so long, they reminded me of rental car places, so I'm guessing the price is really good.

I consider this a very productive lazy Saturday.

My MIL paid for me to take my two eldest kids to the ballet this afternoon.  Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol :)

I saved money by a) parking in a free parking building (good luck rather than good management - my priority was to park close enough for my heavily pregnant body to walk, and I was stoked to discover that Sundays are free parking in that building) and b) being deaf to all pleas for intermission snacks and drinks.  They weren't actually hungry and thirsty, it was a pavlovian response to everyone else queuing up a the snack counter.

I'd also driven out to collect a child from Girl Guides camp this morning, and briefly desired a pie from a shop on the way past (oh, savoury, fatty pastry, how I love you)*, but just kept driving, while sipping my hot tea in my travel mug which I'd prepared before walking out the door.

*an antipodes thing.  'Pie' here is not a dessert.  It is dead animal and gravy wrapped in savoury pastry, small bits of theoretical vegetables optional.  Omnomnom.

I finally cancelled DISH on Thurs.  They called me back on Friday to offer more channels for $12.00 for 6 months.  I told them no I was going to try cutting the cord.  Then they offered me the same deal for 1 year.  I took them up on this because it is only 1 to 2 dollars more than getting Netflix.  I will be saving about $10.00 per month.

I figured they offered me this deal because my equipment is several years old and it wouldn't pay to have me send it back.  This way they make $12.00/month and I don't have to change anything.

I'll see what happens next year when I "cancel" again.

Not quite sure it counts as a "small thing": I handstripped my rather large German Wirehaired Pointer today. Saved between 60 and 90 euros by doing this myself instead of going to a dog groomer. It took a few hours (intermittently, because poor dog got restive by all that plucking going on) but the result is satisfactory. Glad I got this skill under my belt now, as it will save the biannual grooming for the rest of the dog's (hopefully) 15 year life. 2000 euros saved eventually, well worth the hassle.

I made individual Autumn veggie casseroles for dinner.  This time of year my garden is still slowly producing small amounts of different veggies.  Usually not enough of any one to create a side dish.

But trim and chop veggies with leftover rice and create individual casseroles and you have dinner!  One zucchini, one eggplant, one ripe tomato, one greenish tomato, a handful of green beans, three hot cherry peppers along with carrots and onions from the pantry and you have dinner.

Just moved into an apartment that had simple on and off switches to control the bathroom light and extractor fan. Luckily I have my own electric panel in the apartment so I can turn my power off. Installed a variable countdown timer on the extractor fan side and an occupancy sensor light for the lightswitch. I will be able to leave the extractor running for 30 minutes or so after a shower and not have to remember to go back in to turn it off.

Since the countdown timer was a different shape to a standard switch, so I would have to change the faceplate anyway, I figured while I had the box open I might as well put in the occupancy sensor at the same time. I used these Lutron items:

2ndTimer, you should max out the HSA for sure (every year) since it's a great hidden retirement account. See if you can get a dental and vision through his work (I can through mine if you have the high deductible + HSA health plan). Keep the money in the HSA for retirement and use the money in the FSA for the dental surgery since it is also tax free!

Made Nanaimo Bars from scratch for daughter's 23rd birthday (she doesn't like cake).

Kept the heat at 20C even thought I felt chilled and wanted to crank the heat and put on the gas fireplace. Put on a vest over my sweater and long sleeved shirt to warm up, and drank copious amounts of tea.

Horsepoor-- where in Peru?  You will love it!  Went last year, also to Ecuador.

We are hiking the quarry trail to Machu Picchu and then going to the Amazon, but that's about all I know so far.  DH went a few years ago, and he won this trip in a drawing and has been making all the arrangements.  I'm excited though; have never done anything like this before!

Today I was about to run out to Lowe's for a gallon of cream paint, but decided to check my stash of random paint and had over half a gallon of satin white paint, so added a little brown to it and got a perfect cream.  Saved about $30 and probably prevented that white paint from eventually going to waste, too.

Cabbage porn you wants, cabbage porn you gets. This one is 16 lbs.

I don't think that knife is going to do much good on a 16 lb cabbage.

Yeah. I put it there for scale, but after I saw the picture, I realized that the dryer did a pretty good job of showing how big it was.

Told the Hub to max out HSA next year to anticipate dental surgery.

Thanks

I don't understand this.  Every HSA I was in always zeroed out the account at the end of the year.  If you had leftover money in the account, you lost it.  Thus, we couldn't use it for retirement, etc.

Not today, but a few days ago:  Stocked up on a bunch of raspberries on super-sale, and made a raspberry honey preserve.  First time canning anything, fingers crossed that it will be edible when I crack it open!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
