What should my husband invest in?
« on: August 26, 2014, 01:54:16 PM »
My husband starts a new job on Tuesday and I was just looking at his 403b options.  As I was picking out the funds, I got curious on what others would pick.  My husband is 32 and I am 29.  We don't plan to retire until I am 55, but hope for FI much sooner.

80% into one of the domestic Vanguard options, and 20% into the Vanguard international one.

That's what I've got my wife in, only it's the Fidelity Spartan equivalents.

I checked all four Vanguard funds, but you need to apply your asset allocation to determine the percentages.  I would also look at the DFA value fund and the two T. Rowe Price funds.  Dodge and Cox used to be a good fund family, not sure about the international fund today.  The easy way is just to apply your allocation over the Vanguard funds and expect average market returns.

I voted for Vanguard total market fund. Its a no brainer low cost fund that pretty much captures the entire market.

I have had DFA funds before but I got rid of them due to their higher fees

I had the dodge and cox before at old job, it wasn't  bad but it wasn't great either, it returned a bit more but the fees on it were a bit more, I switched out of it and I haven't seen a difference in returns (but I have since left job and moved money to index funds)

Bummer, no Vanguard Total Bond Market?

I would do the bottom two funds (domestic and international), and buy a total Bond fund in your Roth IRA (open one up at Vanguard). Then you can get yourself a nice Three-fund portfolio.

They do have a bond fund, but I do have other accounts open and given my age, I am not that interested in bond funds.

I would do something like 70% Total US Stock Market Index and 30% Total International Stock Market Index. Anything from 50 US / 50 Int to 80 US / 20 Int would work fine.
