What Reddits do you follow?
« on: January 22, 2013, 02:41:17 PM »
Just started using Reddit... took a while to get used to the spartan layout, but have subcribed to a few reddits and finally getting it. What do you all subscribe to?

I find the last four to be of excellent quality. I also have a bunch of programming-related subs, but the quality of submissions varies widely. Whatever you do, unsubscribe from politics and funny/pics.

So addicted to Reddit it's not even funny.  Another great site - ask.metafilter.com.  It's like reality TV in text format - plus it's hugely helpful in terms of crowd-sourcing for those questions Google just can't answer.  :)

/r/ColumbusActive
/r/ColumbusSocial
/r/ColumbusMusic
/r/Riddeit (Columbus cycling sub)
and a bunch for electronic music production and DJing, as well as some music genres I especially like.

I highly recommend subscribing to your local subs if you have them. Mine are a great source for fun free stuff, such as the Monday Night bike ride x urban exploration get-together, some good local jazz nights, and (best of all) the opportunity to volunteer at the Columbus Beerfest. That was a good night.

I read the title of this thread and went "I don't even know what that means."  I thought maybe it was people that you "follow" on there (like how you follow people on twitter?), but from this thread it sounds more like categories you subscribe to?

I've only been linked to threads a few times (mainly through here).

I've heard that reddit can be a big time waster, so I've never bothered to figure it out.  I'm not a fan of time wasters (go on Facebook every 2-3 weeks, for maybe a 10 minute period).  This site is actually my biggest time waster, by far.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

A reddit is a topical forum on reddit. A subreddit is a subforum. Kinda.

It's a colossal timewaster as far as I can tell, and I think the format of the site makes it hard to quickly see what's new, unlike something like a traditional forum. It is really active and has a great community, but those just aren't worth it for me. Keith's post about reddit being urgent without being important really stuck with me, as well.

It can easily be a huge time waster if you let it, which I don't. I check the Columbus reddits once a week when I update my calendar, and I quickly scan through the music-related things once every couple of days to see if there are any articles or tutorials I could learn from. I can see though how it would be easy to get caught in the trap of "huh, that looks interesting..."

Fairly certain that this thread has taken the trophy for the most incidents of the word 'porn'. Ctrl-F shows me 7. (not counting this one)

I've heard that reddit can be a big time waster

Oh, it totally is.  But since I do most of mine at work, it's basically a free time-waster.

(Well, for me anyway.  We won't talk about what it's costing my boss.  :)

the narwhal bacons at midnight? and may I suggest the reddit enhancement suite plugin. I spend a LOT of time on reddit thanks to my incredibly boring job (last day Friday). All that time sink will go away once I start the new gig though.

I added depthhub and longtext today based on above lists. I also frequent imgur for funnies.
this site does a good job distilling some of the popular posts as well along with aggregating several popular user submitted news sites. http://popurls.com/

Also, TIL: Many Europeans get 3-4 weeks off a year. I can only assume this is why the TdF is 3 weeks long and no American race will ever be longer than a week.

I feel like an idiot. I went to find my list of sub-reddits but I can't. How are y'all finding your lists?

I'm also "yolfer" on reddit if anyone wants to be my friend. Ok that sounded pitiful.

I've heard that reddit can be a big time waster, so I've never bothered to figure it out.  I'm not a fan of time wasters (go on Facebook every 2-3 weeks, for maybe a 10 minute period).  This site is actually my biggest time waster, by far.

Don't start now... seriously stay away :)

Yup. It's way too easy to get sucked in for hours browsing. I have trimmed the subreddits I'm subscribed to and try to not check it often, but its a long-term habbit that needs changing for me.

Anyways, here is my core list:

/r/Anticonsumption
/r/beer
/r/blackhat
/r/childfree
/r/DIY
/r/financialindependence
/r/gamedev
/r/Guitar
/r/movies
/r/netsec
/r/OkCupid
/r/personalfinance
/r/RealEstate
/r/relationships
/r/TinyHouses
/r/woodworking

Unsubbing from askreddit, iama, funny/pics, news, etc really helped turn the volume down.

As most have said they can be pretty big time sinks, but day-to-day some of them are slow to update - so I can move on and come to these forums - ha!
