What is the best value in toilet cleaner?
« on: July 25, 2021, 05:03:16 PM »
What is the best value in toilet (bowl) cleaner (soap)?
Product?  Vendor?
And I'm not buying more than a gallon at a time.

We use a mixture of vinegar and bleach for most surface cleaning, including in/around the toilet - costs ~25¢/gallon.  You can add 1 tablespoon bleach (200ppm) if you certified disinfecting power., and 1-2 drops of whatever baking essential oils (e.g. peppermint, lemon) to make it smell really nice.

For removing residue build-up, baking soda works on damn near everything, and costs around 50¢/lb when purchased in bulk.

I’m sure there are off-the-shelf, made by major cleaning company products that are fantastic, but those work for us and seem to cost a heck-of-a-lot less.  YMMV.

Mop the floor. Pour bucket of cleaning water down toilet, swish with th toilet brush and flush.

You can’t beat a gallon of bleach for cleaning.

I suspect that was meant to be vinegar + bleach + water. Without water that would be a potent mixture. I sprinkle baking soda from an old spice container and spray with a vinegar + water + dish soap mixture. The vinegar makes the baking soda foam nicely.

Exactly - sorry if that wasn’t clear.  You dilute the vinegar anywhere from 1:4 to 1:10.  Water is (almost) free and a gallon of distilled white vinegar is about $1.79 or so.

For disinfecting, no need to go higher than 1 tablespoon bleach per gallon (= 200ppm).

Hmm, I would not EVER tell anyone to mix an acid with bleach. This releases chlorine gas, which can kill.

People typically have no idea of the chemical concentration or composition of what they have and if anyone anywhere forgets to dilute or isn't clear on how much to, or someone else (like a teenager or something) gets hold of the idea without the details, I wouldn't want to be responsible. Just something NOT to mess with!

I clicked on this thread simply to recommend baking soda for scrubbing any porcelain. Safe and effective. I sometimes use sal suds as a spray cleaner.

It is kind of strong itself, so I sometimes dilute it as well.

Toilet bowls don't need any cleaner - they're largely self cleaning by constantly flushing fresh water through them.  Just use a toilet brush on them to wipe away poop or water stains once a week or so and the bowl should remain sparkling white and there will be no smell.

The best way to get value out of any cleaner, soap, detergent, etc. is not to use too much of it.

You find out you've been using too much by reducing how much you use until it doesn't do the job any more and then going back up to the previous amount.

Almost any cleaner works better if given time and left to soak in (although be careful with bleach on that one).

A good brush and a swish every couple of days is usually enough. Add a glug of bleach to the bowl once a week and let it sit for 10 minutes before using the brush if the toilet is prone to rings or mold around the rim.

I've never needed to scrub a bowl with anything other than the brush, but then I do a quick once over with the toilet brush every day or so, usually before hopping in the shower. An ounce of prevention and all.

Re-reading what I wrote, I wasn't clear.  Vinegar diluted with water for basic surface cleaning.  Bleach diluted in water for general sterilization. You are correct to point out that you should not put bleach into vinegar.

Ahhh...  Sorry I didn't read it better.
Since there is water in the toilet bowl, I won't dilute the vinegar or bleach much.  And I won't use them at the same time.
I am going to try the baking soda - I'll use the box that's in the fridge.

And I really didn't mean to "yell" at you if it came across like that, sorry. It just always freaks me out when those chemicals get near each other, even in my imagination ...

This is one of those things I just don't sweat.  A 4 pack of toilet bowl cleaner (32 ounce size) is $7 on sale at Costco, and even brand name toilet bowl cleaner comes in under $2 for a 24 ounce bottle at Target or Walmart.  A bottle lasts for months and months and is much easier to use than dumping in bleach or another cleaner, and has the bonus of sticking under the rim.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
