I will be saving up for this in the next 2-3 years.

A little over 10k, and new instead of used.  I never, ever, thought I'd consider a new car, but man, the base 2015 Ford Fiesta is quite attractive to my Mustacian side (the car loving compromise side wants the eco-boost Mustang with the aftermarket boost controller chip, slightly more power than the stock V8 and MUCH better gas mileage, but that list price = ouch).  Anyways, the Fiest List price is as low as $13k NEW, and is an incredible little car!  Great MPG (high listed value and NO problem beating that), very nice.  I knew Ford had stepped up their game, but I had no idea how far they'd come...

Whatever is cheap, fuel efficient and common. Only buy as much car as fits your needs too. Resist the urge to buy the biggest car you can afford. Hatches are good.

Hyundai i30 (or your market's equivalent)? Hyundai is pretty good nowadays.

Why not a 2009/2008/2007?

In my search I narrowed down to the Mazda 3 Hatchback, the Kia Soul, and the Honda Fit.

My SO just bought a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo5 hatchback for $8k with 30k miles. The first gen Aveo's are plagued with issues but significant improvements were made 2009+. You can easily find 2009+ with under 50k miles for under $10k. I was worried about it being Korean but so far it has impressed me in terms of quality. I still prefer the Honda Fit but they seem to be pricey even at 100k miles.

I've seen used 2010 Toyota prius' for around 10k. Used 2011-2012 Chevy volts can be had for 10-11k as well.

If you aren't pulling the trigger for 2-3 years, and if you don't need to haul around passengers, the Elio might be out by then, but I don't recommend preordering it, wait until it actually comes out before buying it.
