Title: What is it?
Post by: BTDretire on August 24, 2019, 02:54:05 PM
I'm cleaning up my computer desk today and I found this object, I don't remember what it does.
I do remember that when I got it, I thought that's pretty cool.
It's about 2" across and all three pieces swivel from the center on the rivet.
The memory isn't as good as it once was.
Getting old ain't for sissies!

It looks like some kind of device for handling ropes when climbing. Were you ever a lumberjack or a firefighter ("axeman")?

I would play around with it--hang it up, dangle things from the swiveling arms, pull and push, watch how they behave... as a way of seeing what the device's affordances are.  My visual imagination isn't strong enough to picture how it will move under different loads.

Is it a safe withdrawal rate predictor? If you hang it up on the third branch from the bottom of an elm tree on the first full moon after you hit 25X expenses, it will tell you if it’s ok to FIRE or not. If it remains in one piece by morning you’re ok to FIRE. If one of the bottom ‘U’s’ fall to the ground you need 3.5% I’m afraid, and if both fall I’m distressed to inform you sub 3% will be necessary.

This is the right answer. That, or it's a sex toy.
