What fun things do you do that save you money?
« on: June 16, 2014, 09:04:03 AM »
I like gardening so planting my herbs means I get to stretch the grocery budget without sacrificing anything.  So what do other people do?

Cooking is a good one.  Wrenching on my old Mustache-mobile can be fun too and saves me oodles.

Oh yah! And I'll add: bike (instead of drive), home haircuts (endlessly entertaining), washing the dog ourselves (hilarious), home improvements/repairs (exciting and sometimes terrifying), scouting garage sale/side of the road finds...the list goes on

I love cooking my own food and working out.  The cooking saves $ over eating out and the working out should save me health care costs over the years

I have a few more to add now that I've slept on it:

--play video games. This is actually quite cheap because I've been playing the same Wii games for over four years. Not bored yet. However, I might get back into World of Warcraft, which would mean a monthly subscription. Hmm...

--watch TV shows on my computer. I've been slowly making my way through all the classic Doctor Who. I'm a pirate >:]   The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones (!!!!last night!!!!), Once Upon a Time, Modern Family, New Girl, Glee, and Chef Ramsay cooking competitions are among my favorites.

--clean. It's weird, but I really enjoy cleaning. It saves me money because I'll never pay someone else to do it, and my things are well-maintained because I care for them.

--masturbate and/or sex. ...what? Just don't get pregnant and this one doesn't cost much at all.

Almost everything is more fun to do yourself than to pay someone else to do, once you start to get the hang of it! My favourites would be cooking my own food and making my own music. I imagine for a lot of people sports would work that way too, although I'm in the middle of World Cup right now and thus my opinion on the matter is not to be trusted.

DIY home improvement... toilets, faucets, drains, electrical, cable TV, telephone, painting, recarpeting... the more we do, the less we fear.
http://the-military-guide.com/2013/06/13/lifestyles-in-retirement-cable-tv-troubleshooting/ (and yes, we eventually ditched DSL and our landline)

I'm a recovering engineer, so we enjoy projects.  We bought a used photovoltaic array, did the mechanical installation, contracted the electrical connections & permits, and then expanded it to 3300 watts.  We also designed & built our own solar water heating system from used components:
http://the-military-guide.com/2013/08/01/extreme-home-improvement-diy-photovoltaic-array/

We grow fruit trees in our back yard:  lychee, star fruit, guava, lemon, mandarin orange, tangerine, 3x mango and several papaya.  We have fruit at nearly every meal.  No scurvy in this house.

We compost & vermipost.  We haven't used fertilizer during this millennium, and we don't have many weeds to pull either.

My spouse picks up coins during our walks.  (At one Navy duty station she did daily FOD walkdowns on runways for 18 months.  She can spot a penny at 20 paces.)

We regard Craigslist and Goodwill as entertainment-- and savings too!

Basically anything that falls under the radical homemaker/ urban homesteading category, particularly gardening, cooking, and finish carpentry (skills at the last aren't great yet, but I'm getting better).

Biking doesn't save a ton of money but it's infinitely more fun than driving.
