What do you do on your lunch break>
« on: September 08, 2014, 03:01:37 PM »
Ok for those that have yet to reach ER, what are you doing with your lunch break in work?

I ask as I find myself weary of catching up on the 'same old bad' news, perusing the usual tech blogs (which now only serve to make my 2013 smartphone feel like useless paperweight)
even reading up on being frugal is getting old, not because it's not awesome, but because I realise I am at a point in my life where there is not a lot more I can cut back on. I have tried reading, but find there are too many people vying for my attention, I don't really make head way in the 30 minutes I get at the desk. Even the cycling forum I have been enjoying as I have gotten used to riding to work is boring me now, as all I really need to do is get on the bike and ride!

Just curious what others are doing, seems everyone else in the office goes out to lunch, but as mine comes ready prepared the night/morning before I can't even go to the canteen...

I eat my prepared lunch in the lunchroom together with my co-workers. Actually around 20% of the people at my office bring their own lunch, including some of my direct co-workers. We may talk about things that aren't especially Mustachian, but they all seem amused with my recent bicycling everywhere, or my cooking exploits (they're all at least 15 years older than me, and are always commenting on how I'm "so young"). :-)

I no longer work outside the home (little kids), but in similar situations I used to read fiction. At the time I was also studying up on a second language for grad school.

I work, unfortunately, since as far as I can tell mealtime doesn't count against the 8 (or 10).

I scarf down the homemade lunch I bring then walk if the weather is decent, if the weather is bad I go to the library and read magazines.  I went out to lunch almost every day for 4-5 years (justified it with the raise I got taking the job).  It put a lot of weight on, and cost a small fortune, so it is good I gave it up, but I do miss the socialization.  There is a group of ladies that eats at the office, but they watch soaps or The View, and I just can't handle that.

I read this forum, the MMM blog, and checkout headlines for WSJ, Boston Herald, Drudge Report, The National Reivew, The Dartmouth, Let's Run, and a variety of other sites.  I read pretty fast.  :)

I got rid of my TVs at home and now watch things online (Hulu & Amazon Prime).  Lately I've noticed at home I've started treating my laptop like at TV, watching and surfing for mindless things I have no real interest in.  So I'm trying to eliminate all pointless internet usage at home (facebook, reddit, TV, Pinterest, etc) and stick to the 1 hour I have for lunch at work.  This allows my my little bit of vice but I'm limited to the 1 hour so I better make it worthwhile!

Must be nice to be able to go home when you're done. Here at work you get the social pressure to go home at a certain time, so there's really no reason not to take a longer lunch break.

Go for a walk on the trails around my office park, read stuff on my iPad, eat a snack. Work provides breakfast here for $2.50. I fill up on breakfast there and usually am not hungry for lunch.

My office has a pretty nice gym and free fitness classes most days. Therefore, I try to do yoga or spin class 3 days out of the week. The other 2 days, I either eat at my desk or in the cafe with friends.

Working out during lunch is great because it takes my mind off work for an hour, I can usually coax a few people to work out with me (thus sneaking in some time for socializing), I burn calories, and it encourages me to pack a lunch to eat at my desk afterwards.

We're given a 30 minute lunch break a day . . . so, I heat up my food in the microwave (5-10 minutes as there's sometimes a line), then eat my food with friends at work (20-25 minutes).  How the hell are you guys finding all this time to not eat lunch during your lunch break?

I eat my lunch far too fast so I can go outside.  I take a nice walk year round outside for about 20 minutes.  I actually like it best in the winter because no one else is outside.  I also like to get outside on my breaks.

Take about 20 minutes to eat my lunch mindfully, then read on my Kindle for 40 or so.  It's the other 8 hours of the work day I have a hard time handling.

This is one reason I'm glad I don't care what other people think.

I usually walk down to grab lunch with my coworkers in the cafeteria (subsidized cafeteria at work, cost is very close to if I made it at home, but more diversity).  It takes 10-15 to get lunch and bring it back up to my desk, then I eat while checking a few headlines.  Maybe 25 mins all in, but I'm salaried and use that extra time to wrap up work and leave at 5.

These days I tend to wolf down my packed lunch on the run and take off work early to hit the gym at work (it's very well stocked). It's a nice feeling to hit the gym and leave the office at the same time as everyone else with my workout done.
