What car are you driving?
« on: December 20, 2016, 05:14:25 PM »
Thomas Stanley, author of the Millionaire Next Door, states that the average millionaire bought a 3-5 year old car worth $20-30k and then they drove it forever. Just seeing what other current/future millionaires are driving out there.

Daily driver: '99 Toyota Camry with 175k miles.
I've been wanting to upgrade but just can't force myself to spend the money on a car when this one still drives like a dream. I also rarely drive as my work is conveniently accessible by public transportation so I spend about $50/month on gas.

Fun car: '05 Honda S2000 with 50k miles. The car fever is damped by my garage queen but the winter months = no fun runs.

2002 Lexus EX 300 with 223K+.
I share it with my 18 year-old when he is home from college. I also have a 15 year-old who will probably drive it when he turns 16.

A one year old clown car SUV (that we do intend to keep for a decade) and a 9 year old subcompact (Mini).

But, I'm really just responding to say I love your avatar. Domo fucking rules!

Now, I'm off to watch the full series of Doom NHK spots on YouTube.

2012 Nissan Leaf SL, for which I paid $7700 in March of 2016 with only 30k miles on it.  It was approximately 80% depreciated in three years of use.

Electric cars are improving rapidly.  Late model versions are cheap because they become outdated technology almost immediately.

2014 Mazda 3 GT-SKY sedan ... purchased new (gasp!) at the end of 2014, but with cash. Buying new isn't the decision I'd make now, but I'm very happy with the car and plan to keep it for a long, long time!

2010 Cadillac CTS wagon that I bought in 2011 for $28k. I have 86k miles on it now, but I put less than 7500 miles on it this year. I'm planning on keeping it at least five more years.

My wife has a 2011 Acura RDX that we bought in 2012. 52k miles on that one, so it should last a long time.

I had a 2004 S2000 that I bought from under a snow drift at a Jeep dealership in Feb 2005. I used it as my daily driver until 2011, then sold it in 2012.

I put a set of snow tires on it for winter months, and never had a problem driving in snow or icy conditions. I once put the top down in a snow storm while driving down I-95 in Philadelphia at around 40mph. I got some funny looks on that ride :)

Just sold a 2001 Honda Accord to a local college student -- that thing lasted us forever and is still trucking

Bought a 2010 Rav4.  LOVE the extra space, and the handling.  48,000 miles on it, so we have a lot of time left in this one.  14,000 spent.

We have a 2005 Ford Focus Wagon, has 175K miles.
We bought it in Nov of 2012 for $3800   I think it had 144K miles when we bought it.

Its not my favorite car ever, but its paid for and its reliable.

2016 Siverado pickup and 2012 Subaru Outback. We buy new and trade every 3-5 years and pay cash.   Don't carry any debt so this expenditure matters little.

2013 Toyota Corolla that I bought new in the first few months of 2013.  I paid cash for the car and it now has 95K miles.  I'm currently searching for jobs closer to home so I can make it last a little longer.

I've got a 2002 Holden Barina with 130,000km. I've had it for about two years.

Speaking of which, I should probably go and wash it, it's covered in dust, cobwebs and bird shit. Then again, it'll only get dirty again in a few days.

2015 Citroën Grand Picasso, 1.6l Diesel (light hybrid system).
Worth about 22000 European Pesos new, very good car, averages 4L/100km. Only thing I would change would be longer 5th and 6th gears.
We did not buy it, it's provided by my wife's work under "this can't be right" conditions.

*Shameful display*

Has 70k mi now and still looks brand new. If I buy another car someday, it'll be 5-6 years old, not 3.

2004 Corolla with 250k miles. Hubs drives a 2007 Civic with 160k or so. We also have a 2001 Chevy truck with who knows how many miles, that we use for DIY, our rental properties, and hubs occasionally hauls things for his work.

We're trying to sell a 2005 Matrix with 168k miles, but no takers yet. No one wants to drive a manual. Sigh.

2009 Hyundai Accent, barebones, manual transmission
Currently has about 45k miles
Bought in mid 2016 with 39k miles for $4800 cash. Gets decent gas mileage (mid 30s mpg) and is a reliable, simple car.

Before that I was driving a 1997 Nissan Sentra with 156k miles. Bought it from family for $1000 at 130k miles, got $400 in insurance money when I got rear ended (damaged the trunk but still 100% driveable, pocketed the insurance money). Drove it for maybe 2 or 3 years. Sold it on Craigslist for $800. That's a net gain of $200!

2008 Subaru Outback with nearly 100k miles; ex-rental car, bought used in 2009 with 36k. This is my second Subaru; they wear like iron. I'm hoping to get another five to ten years out of this one.

2014 Nissan Altima, which now has 40k miles.  I call it the Wundercar because it is so comfortable and I average 35mpg.  42mpg while traveling.  Who knew a big car can get such good mileage.  I normally don't buy new, but it was a gift.  Yeah, damn nice gift.

I also have a 2008 Dodge Ram, with 67k miles, that I inherited from Dad.

2009 Hyundai Accent.  255,xxx miles.  Bought three months ago right at 250k with a bad heater core (DIY'd that before it got cold) but otherwise in tip-top shape for $1000 from the original owner that used it to commute 83 miles highway one-way for some reason.  So far, so good.  Hoping to keep it until at least fall 2018 or 300k miles.

2010 Prius w/ ~121 k miles, bought a year ago @ 104 k miles

2007 Civic Si that's going to be for sale soon ~ 105 k miles

I bike to work now, so don't drive at all.  We buy gas once a month for the Prius unless we're travelling.

I bought my first car a few years ago. Pre-owned and certified 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit  2.5 for 15k. I needed it for work and got mileage for driving it a couple days per week.

I sold it for 7k just over a year ago, and claimed about 8k in mileage expenses over the 2 years used for work, so at the end of the day the car didn't cost me at all that much. Just insurance costs, gas, and a few small maintenance bills.

Now I ride a cool italian road bike, and take public transit in the Winter.

Thinking about buying a motorcycle in the Spring!

2011 Highlander.  That's not too Badass.  But the Badass thing is that I'm gonna put under 5,000 miles (4,887 mi./year pace) on it this year.  I know there are some that will do better than that, but I'm very happy with it.

Drove my 1991 Toyota MR2 (bought in 1996) with 283,000 miles to work today.  The wife has a 2002 Toyota Celica (bought new) with 165,000 (IIRC).

Before you think us to be very mustachian, we have too many vehicles...  I also have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse with 135,000 miles (bought in 2002) and a 1994 Suzuki Katana with 14,000 miles (bought in 2014 I think?).

2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS - 145k: I use to commute to work, 3-4 days per week, owned since 2005.
2008 Mazda 3i Sport - 128k: Wife uses for any errands and kid hauling duties during the week, and is our family's weekend and road trip car, owned since 2009.

It's very hard for me to fight off the new(er) car bug; I enjoy cars from a hobby perspective and keep up with new car news and reviews constantly. I keep reminding myself I have other financial priorities to attend to first and we already have a reasonably reliable and efficient fleet of paid off cars, and that seems to be working so far!

Probably replacing the Mazda in 1-3 years with the arrival of another baby, on the radar for that is a 2015+ Kia Sedona, 2014+ Honda Odyssey, or 2017+ Chrysler Pacifica (Hybrid?).

2005 VW Jetta TDI. Bought in 2012 when pregnant, working excessive hours and needed reliable car. Looked for months because I wanted the diesel (I run biodiesel, more expensive but in line with my values and makes me happy every time I drive). Paid 8k. It will run for a long time because diesel. But maintenance has been costly.

We also have 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. This was a gift. Has almost 200k on odometer and will likely need to have batteries replaced or something soon. Debating on fixing vs getting a used truck.

I have a 2008 Mazda 2, 101k miles. Great car, very happy with it. I bought it 6 years ago before my FIRE plans. Planning to keep it going as long as possible.

My OH has a 2006 VW polo 108k miles. This car has had more problems, pretty much guaranteed I'm doing a repair on it every 6 months. OH is wanting a different car, trying to delay this as bordom is the only reason :)

I've got a 2002 Silverado.  Looks like crap.

Which is great, because no one will steal it.  But it drives just fine, and isn't that what it's supposed to do?

Wife drives a 2010 BMW 3-Series, but as "multimillionaire next door" types, it was easily affordable.

Me: 2005 Toyota Matrix bought used in 2012 for $7k
Wife: 2010 Toyota Rav4 bought used in 2012 for $12k (I think)
Toy: 1975 Triumph TR6 bought used in 1983 for $3k.  (Face punch worthy... Maintenance/insurance/registration is pretty excessive for the tiny number of miles it gets driven a year.)

My wife drives a 2007 Acura MDX bought used with 4K miles - almost 140K miles.  We will likely refresh at 200K miles.
My car is a 2009 Mercedes C350 bought new (paid cash) with 96K miles  Likely facepunchable move but it satisfies my fuel economy itch and my performance itch.  I like to keep my cars until 200K miles - this one might go longer because I love it and it is flawless.

I also have a 2001 GEM electric car.  Bought used with 4000 miles.  I love it for cruising around town and it is fun to drive.  We will never get rid of it unless someday we want a newer version.

How the heck did you manage to get a 2 year old Rav4 for $12k?!?!?!  Thats a hell of a deal.  The 2010's in my area are still all listed for more than that, the cheapest one had 200k and it's still listed at $13k.

Used EVs and plug-in hybrids are a fantastic deal currently.

Gah!  Because I am terrible at remembering numbers.  ;)   I went back and looked.  It was $15k.  ...and purchased in 2013.  Very low mileage, but cost more than I stated and was older than I stated.

I'm driving a 2015 Nissan Versa Note that I bought brand new for $10,600.  Wife drives a 2014 Kia Sorento that we bought used (~35k miles) for $14,500.  I'm paying off my car today (literally)!  I plan to drive the Note for the next 10+yrs.  Wifey wants a 2015+ Kia Sedona to haul the kids around.  I'm putting that off for now, but will probably give in sometime next year.
