I have wavy thick and coarse hair that I layer using the ponytail method.

I use number 3, but I do it three times.  Once with all my hair, the second with all the hair that grows from half-way up my ears and above, and the last with the hair that grows above my ears.

Sally's Beauty supply, would be a good place to buy some really good scissors, clippers or trimmers!
