What are your "black jelly beans"?
« on: July 07, 2015, 06:19:43 AM »
I really liked this comment from Da55id on the latest MMM post:

Quote
The Black Jellybean theory of economics. When I was 5 years old, my mom frequently visited an older kindly couple. They always had a bowl of jellybeans for the kids..it would start off full of various colors/flavors but over time the selections would be reduced to black jellybeans haunting the bottom of the bowl…and then these would just sit there for weeks until they’d be thrown out, and the process would start over. Even at that age I learned this lesson…if you LIKE things like black jellybeans people will be glad to just shove them at you.

What are your black jelly beans?  Are you ever happy to take something off someone's hands while celebrating inside?

Love this question!  I'm curious to see what others write.  I love taking used clothing off of people's hands.

yum licorice <== (that's a hard word to spell i had to look it up)
I do like me some black jelly beans.

Anyway I used to work at an apartment complex as maintenance a for a summer while I was in college. I took sooooo much shit people threw away so they really weren't "giving" it to me but i still feel like I was taking it off their hands (or the dumpsters hands). I still walk around my house and there is all kinds of stuff I have that I'm like yea that was in the dumpster.

-All kinds of small kitchen stuff like a food processor, blender, plates, hot pads, cooling rack, scale, lots of random stuff.
-Both of the nice tall plastic laundry baskets I still use were sitting beside a dumpster.
-Found a glass chess set, large dresser top mirror, toaster oven, iHOME that i all sold on craigslist
-Lots of kinda crappy furniture that I used in college but got rid of when I moved was from beside the dumpster.

Also, I've gotten a few nice things of craigslist for free such as a queen mattress my GF used for 1 year in college which is now used in the guest room bed ever since she moved in.

Ooh, this is a very interesting question! I'm not sure I have a material-goods "black jellybeans," but as a lawyer, my area of the law is one that most people avoid like the plague. Enjoying it (as much as anyone can enjoy being a lawyer, which is to say, not much) means that I don't have to work nearly as hard to be reasonably successful, compared to people doing the work everyone wants to do like commercial real-estate law. Many of my cases are black jellybeans by commercial-law standards, but for my interests, they're perfect.

Very interesting way to look at things!

The majority of my apartment is furnished with black jellybeans. I got almost everything, including all my dishes, most of my pots/pans, and furniture from freecycle and trash picking (I didn't have a wedding or a wedding registry and pointedly asked for no gifts since we had everything we needed by that point).

Currently, people give me their surplus produce and clothing.

I enjoy taking used clothes ( especially for my kids).  I never mind going through the clothes and anything we can't use gets passed on to other people I know who also love  hand me downs.

old storage shelves/work benches.  My garage is full of them (12 different ones that I can think of).  Someone once commented on how much I spend for "Storage solutions" I just chuckled knowing I spent more on screws to assemble them in a different pattern than on all the shelves combined.

This is such an excellent perspective!  How great of an idea to choose a career that might allow you to work fewer hours/bill higher/climb the ladder faster simply because you don’t mind doing what others don’t!

I’m like this too—I enjoy a lot of the “scut work” that pops up in engineering.  I like getting out of my office to turn a wrench in the shop or mindlessly organizing parts over good music or conversation with the technicians.  The main benefit is a positive impact on my day by mixing things up, but I also get to be a bigger team player and a more well-rounded (read: desirable) employee.

Mine are cookbooks used, craft supplies such as fabric and floss, and clothing from people that I trust and know my sizes mostly.

Plastic bags! We like to use them for garbage and cat litter, but never seem to get any since we 1. Don't buy much and 2. Use our backpacks when we do.

awesome topic!
My "Black Jelly Beans" would include any decent wooden boards.  If it's longer than 24" I tend to keep (and reuse) it in projects.  Sometimes I dismantle shipping pallets to re-purpose the 1x4s (just google "Steve Ramsey pallet wood")  I recently made a deck storage box/seat using nothing but wood I'd reclaimed from other people/projects, plus a bunch of screws and brad-nails.

Mind sharing what kind of law? I'm also an attorney so I'm interested.  One "black jellybean" area I'm willing to tackle is litigation in bankruptcy cases.  I don't represent the debtor but rather a creditor that is trying to get money or access an insurance policy or prevent a bankruptcy.

We take office furniture from DH's office whenever they redecorate.  We have many many solid wood bookcases around our house and solid wood tables that we use for desks or TV tables.  We also have a ton of cheaper 30 x 60 folding tables and plastic chairs that we use for parties.  In addition, we have acquired an insane amount of steal shelving and some nice steal cabinets, all from his office.    Why did we get all of it?  People will say they want it, but then they never get it.  After it sits for a couple of weeks, the office manager tells DH to bring the truck and he takes it apart and gets it out of there right away.   Everyone is happy!  Helps make our F150 third vehicle "farm truck" worth a little bit more to us.

I happen to love black jellybeans, and immediately got the story:)

The one that popped into my head was bones - Whenever someone (in my age group, our older friends know better) cook a roast chicken or turkey or something, I always rescue the bird before it hits the garbage can. I offer to show people how to pick the carcass clean of meat and how to make stock, but they generally can't be bothered.

I have several friends who just throw the carcasses into the freezer and bring me bones when they see me next :)

My black jelly beans are bicycles.
Somehow they always find me.
My friends give me the ones their kids have "outgrown" or don't work.
The dump always has some great finds either in metal waste or the re-use building.
I fix and give away or sell depending on what it is.
It's been extremely fulfilling & at times, lucrative.

really?  who??  I've never experienced someone who doesn't want to eat the grape ones.  Perhaps we just run in a different demographic.
My personal favorite are the "fire" jolly ranchers, but I've found them incredibly hard to find (except online)

Love this question! Most of my house was furnished with black jelly beans - hand me down furniture that no one else wanted, dishes, rugs, etc.

1. Like an earlier poster, I love to get bones for making stock. After holidays my mom and mother in law both give me turkey and ham bones. I make huge batches of stock and soup and freeze them for lunches to bring to work.

2. Junk mail. I work in nonprofit fundraising/marketing so I love to see what other organizations are doing for their solicitations, event invitations, newsletters, etc. People know that I save these things and bring them to me. I just recycle the ones that aren't special but I also get a lot of great ideas this way.

I'm pretty sure this will earn me worst-person-on-the-forum status, but when my husband's uncle passed away last winter, he had no direct heirs. So it fell to some random relatives to clean out the house and take what they wanted. I was in the house after they'd been at this for 5 months.

I feel like this in my profession too. I am an accountant and I feel us "support workers" (accountants, lawyers, admin etc) do best in unsexy industries. An accountant in something like waste management will generally earn a lot more than in say, media and likely be treated better. And at the end of the day the work is very similar wherever you work so pick the black jelly bean and enjoy it's taste :-)

Older volvos.. (1980s/1990s)

We have never looked for one, they just always seem to find us. People just call us up and say 'want it?' DH has done numerous swaps, engines replacements etc on them over the years. One day, when we are FIRE, we'd love to get an old amazon wagon and convert it to electric.... totally fun project!

Wait, people don't like black jelly beans?  I love all the spice ones : clove, wintergreen, cinnamon...

We've been the recipients of all sorts of neat old stuff: vintage sewing machines (treadle and 40s electric, with all the attachments), washstands, dining room sets, bedroom sets (waterfall style), antique kitchen tools, shop tools, wood tools, china, baskets of knitting needles in all sizes and materials, stashes of yarn and sewing notions, old books and lamps (I rewired), instruments, jewelry, trunks.  Lots of things for the kids, too: clothes, toys, games, puzzles, more books, bunkbeds, bikes.

The oddest thing one of the kids retrieved from a pile of castoffs: a 12' pole vaulting pole.  DS carried it home, carefully balanced in one hand while riding his bike.

At my wife's work, the office manager orders fruits, nuts and Lindt chocolates for the office. Nobody ever eats them so she takes it all home. Sometimes, we make an apple pie (using the office apples) and she takes it back to the office. It's an awesome way to gain popularity for cheap. :)

So in a way, we are feeding them back their black jelly beans and they don't even know it.

My bbq was a black jelly bean. A few years ago, everyone we knew were buying fancy large gas barbecues. We ended up getting a hand-me-down from one of our friends who "needed" one of these new barbecues.
Their upgrade was a win for us!

+1 manual transmission non-fancy cars. Go to a city lot and ask for the manuals, nobody wants them in the city. Last time, buying new from a city dealer was cheaper than 1-2y.o. cars on craigslist.

Bones - ham, chicken, beef. Dandelion leaves. Sanding, painting, pulling weeds, cleaning, apartment hunting. I don't mind these tasks and can usually get free meals or accommodations by helping people out.

I leave some jellybeans too. There are people who enjoy being surrounded by children. These people are worth their weight in gold. I wish that was me. Daycare rates here are crazy.

Bananas with black spots on.

Somehow other people prefer the hard greenish bananas that taste awful to me. I like the sweet soft ones that are starting to go black. So, on the occasions where the office manager buys fruit at the office, I swoop in after a couple of days and get the leftover bananas. Or sometimes people will just give me the bananas that they brought from home, when it looks too old for them to eat. Craziness!

Such important work! I take a few pro bono protection order cases / year and do some family law but I don't think I could handle (emotionally) making it my whole practice.  I also like the variety of being in a general practice firm.

Elderberries. They grow everywhere here, but I seem to be the only person who knows they're edible. Ditto daylily, maypops (Passiflora incantata), dandelion, black walnut, and a host of other wild edibles. Don't even have much competition for blackberries these days - everyone knows those are edible, but most are too wussy to brave the thorns.

Also zucchini donations. I don't have to grow squash.

Office leftovers.  I'm thankful that my office often orders (too much) food.  They put it in the food where no one touches for a few days before it gets thrown out - I get free lunch for a few days, while my coworkers continue their $8-$12/day habit of eating out.

Office leftovers.  I'm thankful that my office often orders (too much) food.  They put it in the food where no one touches for a few days before it gets thrown out - I get free lunch for a few days, while my coworkers continue their $8-$12/day habit of eating out.

My office (~200 people) there's a group of about 5-6 of us that know when there is a Corporate team in town, what lunch place they are ordering from and the first break right off lunch (when they move the food from the conference room to break room for the minions to eat).  We've become so well known that once the secretary running the meeting sent the dirty group of vultures an email letting us know they moved the break up and the food was ready 20mins early.

Some people laugh, others mock/roll eyes, I get free lunch.  The one thing I do find funny, no one wants to eat an hour old sandwich, but pizza from the night before - people are all over that.  Seriously, late meeting, pizza is left out overnight and people go crazy for it (once wit ha sign that said 1 piece only).  That is ok, but a fresh sandwich is not?  I don't get people.

We are basically the garbage disposal family of the block. Someone going out of town? Call us and we take all their perishables. We have three boys, so I'm assuming that's why they do it, instead of because they think we are poor. I wouldn't necessarily care if they do think we are poor, though. I make it a point to never turn down cast off food. We've gotten Greek yogurt, tons of fresh produce, organic, fresh squeezed juice, etc. Of course I am pretty close with my neighbors. I wouldn't necessarily accept food from perfect strangers.

We also accept hand me down clothes from everyone as well.

I think mine is "apartments that look junky, especially from the outside." Let me tell you, the duplex I rent in looks Stone Cold Haunted from the outside. The yard is a mess, with barely any grass and about 400 new Box Elder seedlings every week. The siding is covered in stains and most likely won't get replaced, since it is asbestos (and therefore prohibitively expensive to remove, though it's nbd while it's in place). The back patio is maybe not structurally sound, and definitely has an abrupt slope to it. There are no gutters. The basement has a mud floor.

But we are paying well below market rent for the area, which is bikeable to both of our jobs, we're slowly cleaning up parts of the yard, and the inside is actually pretty nice, with original moldings and pocket doors and well-cared-for hardwood floors, and the kitchen and bath are relatively recently renovated. There are a ton of south-facing windows, and that stupid Box Elder tree provides shade in the summer but lets the sun in in the winter. So who cares if it is the ugliest house on the street! (It used to be the second-ugliest house on the street, but someone is in the process of flipping the former ugliness champion.)

I don't know that I would *buy* this house for much more than the cost of land - there's some serious deferred maintenance going on - but renting half of it is pretty good.

Craziness!

Me too! I regularly get a few bananas per week from workmates disgusted by the natural black spots. And sometimes a very fussy workmate would give me his just-bought lunch if he doesn't like it, and he goes to buy a new one that satisfies his taste. If it's something I like, I have no qualms in taking it - and eat my homemade lunch for dinner!

Similar to ComfyFutons response, I just graduated college two months ago and was always flabbergasted at the amount of stuff students would throw away at the end of each semester. TV's, laptops, working mini-fridges, boxes of hygenics (Still using a 12 pack of dental floss I found in the dumpster I found at the end of Sophomore year).

I have a coworker who gives me canned food and items such as dried milk and mashed potato flakes.  I am quite grateful extra food is extra food.  She sometimes has too much for just her and her elderly uncle who lives with her...I need to find uses for the dried milk but the other things are happily consumed...
