Suggest a Winter Destination
« on: December 07, 2015, 07:05:59 AM »
Looking to take the wife and kids somewhere between Christmas and New Years. We would most likely rent a house on VRBO, which is what we usually do when we travel somewhere. Probably limited to visiting the following states:  MI, OH, PA, NY, WV, VA, MD.

We aren't skiers, so that might limit it a bit. Just looking for a cool place to get out of town for a few days and do some family activities after the Christmas madness is over.  Thoughts?

Virginia Beach area?  Warm enough to have some fun.  You can go to Williamsburg for their holiday programs.

Or how about DC?  That'd be fun at Xmas, with lots of free stuff to do!

Annapolis MD is another beautiful location if you like colonial/naval history.  Very beautiful during Christmastime.

If beach-walks and seclusion is your thing, I'd give a look at the outer-banks of NC (a few hours past Virginia Beach)... because it is off-season you can rent a house a block from the beach for just a few hundred/week and have the beach mostly to yourself... of course many of the restaurants will be closed.  If the Outer-banks are too far consider the beaches on MD/NJ (Dewey, Bethany, Rehoboth)... probably closer to you than Virginia Beach, and it will be more secluded in December (that may be better or worse for you).  From there Chincoteague is just ~hr trip away.

Charlottesville, VA is a great town with lots of hiking and cycling nearby, and during that week all the college kids will be gone - bet you could pick up a BnB rental on the cheap.

I second Charlottesville, VA.  Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is a beautiful town.  You can look around the University of Virginia, go biking or hiking, visit Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and drive out to the Shenandoah Valley (http://www.visitshenandoah.org/).
