Title: What's on your Bucket List? Here's mine..
Post by: cbr shadow on February 10, 2016, 03:08:05 PM
I'm really motivated by some of the things I see people doing in FIRE.  Arebelspy for example; hiking the El Camino de Santiago with his (pregnant!) wife for 500 miles in 35 days, people doing bike touring, physical goals such as weight lifting and endurance events, seeing different parts of the world, etc.  When I see something inspiring I normally say "Wow.. amazing!  Add that to my list.." but that list doesn't physically exist.  I'll create one now though, and I'll add to it as I get inspired.  Here's what I have so far (Crossed out items that I've completed)

1) Live in a country outside of the US for at least 1 year Lived in Australia for 18 months
2) Bike Touring: Go on a multi-day bike tour where you only camp (no hotel). I've never done any type of bike touring before
3) Hike at least 100 miles of the El Camino de Santiago in Spain
4) Run a sub 7-minute mile
5) Cycle a 40km Time Trial in under 1 hour (current best is 1:05:30)
6) Save a life
7)Learn to swim efficiently (be able to swim 1 mile)
8)Bench press 400 lbs (1 rep calculated max) Bench pressed 315 x 11 reps = 411 estimated 1RM
9)Complete at least 20 "14ers" in Colorado with my wife (6 down, 14 to go!)
10) Complete a "Century Ride" (100 miles) with my wife on a tandem bicycle
11) Learn Spanish
12) Become FI by age of 40, retire early by age 44.

What's on your bucket list?

Don't have one! I have things I look forward to (e.g., taking vacations across the country each summer as the kids grow up, having more kids, etc), but nothing really that I feel I need or would like to do before dying.

To be honest, the idea has always seemed kind of morbid to me, but that might just be me being superstitious.

I haven't even thought about a bucket list... I suppose that would be a good thing to do for me.  Thanks for the thoughts!!!

Mine would probably include something musical... maybe a performance season with my local orchestra?  I definitely want to live in certain parts of Europe for longer stints.

Wow great list! I need to look into some of those.
"Experience Weightlessness" and "learn to scuba" might be able to both be checked off at the same time.  When you get neutral buoyancy in scuba you feel like you're flying.

I don't have a bucket list per se, but I am posting to follow and hear some of these interesting ideas and goals.
Hopefully not too much aspiriational voyeurism for me.

As for no bucket list, I think of it as the same reason I don't do New Years Resolutions, I'm more of a continuous improvement kind of guy.
I'll see if I change my mind after following this thread.

I don't have a "bucket list" yet but posting to follow as well. Here are just a few things that come to mind:

-Get married
-Become FI by age 40
-Have at least 2 children
-Own a Steinway & Sons grand piano (ideally travel the country and play on a bunch of different ones, then buy my favorite)
-Drive across the country and visit beautiful/interesting places
-Play one of the largest and most historical pipe organs in the world

-liked this one from above-
-Visit a castle

ya, I never really thought about a bucket list.

But the weightlifting things are ironic because that was all I cared about from 18-27, and before that it was all bmx/motocross/skateboard. Its nice to check off little things like jumping out of a plane, but ive never really put it on a list.

Now at 28 I'm always trying new things and it kind of feels like drinking from a firehose. 25+ years of being a small town midwest boy to suddenly a world traveler who tries every new thing possible. I literally did not know what sushi was a few years ago until I ordered it thinking that "roll" meant an "egg roll..." if that gives you a feel of my home town lol.

The only things I can think of are to continue to travel the world, hike/bike/lift weights, start a blog, start an online business, donate to charities, and become financially independent.

I would like to live in a new city and leave behind the same city I have been in for 28 years.

Re: floating in the dead sea. I tried but you really can't anymore. It's been mined for the minerals so you can buy a "real dead sea mineral facial scrub!" And the water is crystal clear now.

That's a bummer. I'll have to find the next saltiest body of water - I'm a good swimmer but as soon as I stop moving I sink like a rock, and I want to really, truly float at least once!

Not so much a bucket list as a philosophy. I strive to infuse every day with beauty, joy, and love. I figure if I get some of that every day I'll be happy no matter where I am or what my circumstances are? And when I am getting ready to kick the bucket, I will know my life was full of the things that mattered most to me.

(1) Visit all U.S. 50 states (done);
(2) Visit all countries and areas on the planet. This seems to be unachievable, as many countries are not accessible. So this year I modified it to 100 countries and areas in the worlds first (done 24 now);
(3) Get Open Water Scuba Diving Certification;
(4) Visit Antarctic;
(5) Learning Spanish (on going);
(6) Become financially independent (done);
(7) Retire and never work again;

3. Publish a novel (done!)
4. Produce 30% of our summer food from our garden (nearly there!)
5. Walk a long distance hiking trail with family
6. Teach college (done!)
7. Go to Salem Mass for Halloween
8. Visit every continent
9. Following on #3- become a full-time fiction writer

Out of shear laziness, I am not going to post my entire bucket list.

That being said, the most interesting thing about my approach is probably that I have started migrating all of my location specific bucket list items to Google Earth.  For those of you with Google Earth installed on your computer, see attached .kmz file for details.  I also find Google Earth useful for tacking places that I have already been, so when someone asks me about a story from a particular location or trip, I can show them in Google Earth.

Also does google earth have any cool export tools to make its stuff work on websites/blogs?

It's interesting that there are some common goals here. I see some of my own goals listed.

Here they are:

1. write at least one novel, or series of novels
2. write a screenplay
3. learn Italian, and re-learn French
4. hike through Italy, England, France, Spain
5. travel to Japan, explore the countryside
6. live in the woods on an island on the Canadian west coast
7. FIRE fully to do all of the above in ~5-10 years

What I like about this thread is that there's loads of things that I've already "ticked" and it's nice to be reminded (most of the places on Kriegspiel's list, for example.) There are things which I can do easily, whenever I like, but which are sufficiently hard for some people that they'd write it on a bucket list (run a 7 minute mile, or visit a castle, for example.) There are things on people's bucket lists that are parts of my daily life that I should never take for granted (having children, for example). There are things on some people's lists that are completely out of reach for me (quite a lot of the non-travel bits of Kriegspiel's list, for example).

Best of all, though, there are some great ideas for things to do in the future.

I agree.  As for my 7 minute mile being on the list, I've always been into strength/weight lifting, so endurance has been low on the priorities.  For a guy who is built like me a 7 minute mile would take some major training and dedication.  For some people a 7 minute mile is easy, but not too many of them can reach the 400 lb bench press strength goal.  I'm always impressed with the crossfit guys that seem to have a good balance between strength/endurance.

Lots of great ideas on here so far.

Yes, that's pretty much what I meant.  I know plenty of keen runners who train extremely hard to break 5 minutes for a mile and others (women in their 50s) who train hard to do a 10-minute mile. People (me included) spend a lot of effort in trying to run an arbitrary distance (the 42.2km of a marathon, for example) in some arbitrary amount of time. Crossfit advocates are generally seen as quite annoying/a bit weird in running circles though.

I helped complete something from my 70 yr old dad's "bucket list" (more of a lifelong ambition in this case) this week, by publishing his stories on Amazon and he's already had a few sales in the UK and US.

Yep. My grandmother died 5 years ago. She (and my grandfather) raised my mom and uncle a couple of blocks from Wrigley Field, but never got to see them win a World Series. But she did get to see some great players--Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, Andre Dawson, Bruce Sutter, etc.  And of course Harry Caray...not a player, but a huge part of Cubs history.

2. Be "energy independent" (off the grid)
3. squat 315x3 @ 165lbs BW
4. 18:00 5k
5. Lead 5.12 trad climbs in the alpine
6. Climb above 20000ft
7. Once accomplished, take all of those up a notch, and repeat.
8. Write a book, or some similarly encompassing form of media
9. seek enlightenment
10. two chicks at the same time, man

1.  Go to Japan
2.  Go to Europe again on a slow vacation
3.  Sit on my patio reading until I am bored to tears
4.  Really try to see how profitable I can make my side gig without working myself to death.
5.  Become healthier.

1) Be a good father
2) Travel outside the US(Specifically Victoria Falls, Versailles, Venice, Amazon basin, plus whatever else)
3) Publish a book
4) Retire by age 50
5) Move back to the pacific coast

Everything else has been done.

Pretty much all travel for me:

West Africa - maybe Nigeria or Cote d'Ivoire
Bangkok
Kerala
Sichuan
Malito, Calabria - Great Grandfather's home village
Sorrento - Great Grandmother's home town
Amsterdam
Baarle, Netherlands/Belgium
Barcelona
Middle East - maybe Egypt or Lebanon
Los Angeles
Brazil

Also, live abroad for a bit and become fluent in the local language, maybe Mexico or Ecuador.

And learn:
Sign Language
Thai
Mandarin

The almost-bucket list is way way bigger than this, but these are the real ones.

Ours is mostly travel and we have been slowly crossing countries and  places in the US off our list. It has been great fun. We only put a few things on it and then when completed we add more.  We always have fun deciding what is next and sometimes when the time comes we change our minds and do something else. Most trips we plan a year in advance but not always. The anticipation of going is fun too.

Trust me, I know all about missing links. I do have part of my tree going back to 542 so if I can get most of them back to 1500 then to me it will be done.
Title: Re: What's on your Bucket List? Here's mine..
Post by: cerat0n1a on April 13, 2016, 02:54:59 AM
Going back to 1500 would be ~24 generations for me, so about 16 million people. Obviously it will be less than that (there'll be a lot of distant cousins marrying each other when you're talking those kind of numbers and certainly in more own family tree, there are plenty of illegitimate births where no father is recorded and so no prospect of going further.)  I think you only have to go back to about 1300 for it to be true that everyone alive in England then whose line has persisted is an ancestor of everyone of English ancestry now.

In practice, for most people in England, Scotland & Wales, accurately tracing your ancestors beyond about 1780 or so relies on having less common surnames and your ancestors not moving round much. Church records weren't always kept reliably and often don't even record the names of mothers. Ireland is even worse because most of the old records were destroyed in the 1922 civil war. America was much better at keeping records and going back to the 1600s in New England is much more feasible.

Before about 1850 it appears to be quite common to marry your first cousin - makes for a lot of confusion!

Victoria in Australia has them all beat - their records are marvelous (if not that far back) Father's name, Mother's name (and maiden name), including in marriage certificates, and death certificates have every child and their ages - of course, it relies upon people giving the right answers - one relation had a surname of McInnes - or maybe Maginnis - or any of the other 14 different ways they spelt it on their children's birth certificates! Way back when I had to look at microfische, I worked out every Australian ancestor in less than 2 weeks. I thought some of the English records were bombed in WW2. But the Mormans have done everyone interested in ancestry a huge service.

Don't have too many cousins marrying cousins in the family tree that I've found; where I've tended to hit a blank is with Welsh ancestors - if the parish records show three Thomas Jones or Martha Jones born in the same village in the same year in 1780odd, which one is the right one ? When most of the people you're looking at sign the wedding register with an X because they can't read or write, the spelling can get interesting too, as you say.

AFAIK, the only English records that were destroyed were a census from the 1920s/1930s, but there's quite a lot of other information available for things as recent as that. Agree that the Mormons have done an awesome job making the data available for everyone.

Huh, that's really interesting.

What are the different ways you've seen them spell "X"?

:-)   Sometimes you just get a splodge of ink and the vicar has helpfully annotated "his mark" or suchlike on the wedding certificate...

Othertimes the officiating priest obviously wasn't listening too carefully - I've seen the wedding of "Rosa Nutter" neatly recorded as "Susan Hotter"
