Tax Season - Free and easy ways to file taxes?
« on: January 31, 2019, 11:44:50 AM »
I worked for 3 different employers last year and also have 2 1099-r to file.

Trying to avoid turbotax, they show that I owe $2k+ in taxes and want me to pay for their services.

Tried credit karma, but they wouldn't allow me to submit my 1099-r.

Trying to file on irs.gov but its too complicated for me with my situation. I like that I can choose both single and head of household but I dont understand how to submit multiple w2s.

Any other options?

My recommendation: Print the IRS forms and fill them out. It isn't that complicated, and you could probably use last year's return as a guide. All of the W-2 info gets added up and put on the same line, and same for 1099-R. Then mail 'em in when you're all done.

That's what I ended up doing. Added everything together.

I have heard but haven’t confirmed that freetaxusa.com does 1099-r for free.

How much do you think you owe?  If not $2K+, why do you think there is a difference between your and TT's numbers?

Since I have to file in two states and have a rental property, HR Block and Turbo tax were getting spending, so I switched to FreeTaxUSA as well. It wasn't free, but it was ~75% less than Turbo Tax.

TT doesn't allow me to change my filing status, as I claim two, and I've paid taxes on the 1099-r when it was distributed to me but they say I owe more. If i do owe, it should be less than 1000.

When I ran it through the IRS.gov site, they said I overpaid by 7000. So I'm going to try it again on the IRS site, I found where you can add multiple forms instead of adding them all together.

How can you claim two filing statuses?
