Our washer (top-loader with agitator) has been having on-and-off issues with loud banging and shaking during the spin cycle.
It all started when I washed a bathmat. It seems to be worse when I do a small load vs. a larger load. The same thing happened in our old apartment and I remember the landlord fixing it very quickly. Not sure what he did though.
Any suggestions?

Commenting to follow...I have the same issue!

A small load may unbalance the machine, as it ends up on one side of the barrel, so the machine wobbles off its centre of gravity. A larger load is spread around the barrel so is less of an issue.
Also, if the machine isn't level, it may vibrate and bounce around. Maybe try adjusting the feet so they are at least all touching the floor, and preferably set to keep the machine level.

In the absence of bricks, I have a stack of old uni textbooks I was unable to sell that I use to keep my washing machine stable.
Necessity is the mother of invention.

Pretty much every washing machine that I've ever seen bouncing around was either not leveled properly, or had an uneven load. Next time it happens open the machine, and check the clothing inside . . . it it's all bunched up on one side you have the culprit. If that looks fine, get out your level and play with the feet.

What they said. Use a level to check, then screw the little plastic legs accordingly.

Just went through this as well. Seems there is a "packing bolt" installed for securing washer tubs in transit that should be removed when installing. We transported our own washer to save money. After 2 years of "walking" and shaking so hard the neighbors could hear it google provided this answer. Sure enough then we tipped it back and looked underneath the bolt had broken off but the plastic spacer was still in place. Removed and leveled the machine and so far it's good.
