Wash sell question
« on: October 19, 2014, 09:00:28 AM »
Aight I have made things really complicated for myself (just out of ignorance).

So I have read up more on wash sell rules after realizing I took a loss on a investment after having bought 10% of the position 28 days following my entire sell of the position. Not only did I take a loss in it I wanted to remain in it so I bought some shares in my IRA (apparently since 2008 this has become a large mistake). Here is my example....the numbers/stock are all made up

Bought 100 shares of VTI 8 months ago. Bought another 10 shares 28 days ago(total cost 15k. Sold all 110 shares today(for 10k) (5k loss). Bought 115 shares in my IRA. Realized my desire to stay in the position but to take a loss might have cost me big....

Is there any way to fix this? I am fine with selling my position in my IRA (doesn't really have a loss or a gain...maybe 2% one way or the other) But in usual circumstances it looks like in order to take the 5k loss on something I didnt hold or sell for 30 days i would have to get back into the position and hold it for at least 30 days. Than my purchase price when I sell would be the amount of purchased plus my original capital loss.
