Want to install a AC in our house.. Need Advice
« on: May 12, 2016, 08:35:00 AM »
Hello,

So I have a home, 1000SQ and we wan't a AC as the summers here can be long and hot. Problem is from contractors and professionals I have talked to they tell me I need to replace the furnace when I want to add a AC unit to the house. The furnace is from 1989. Works very well and has no problems.

So my thing is, I want AC but don't want to replace a well working furnace to do it. Do I have too?

Thoughts?

Might be necessary if you want the AC to use your current ductwork and thermostat.

The alternative is to a get a mini-split unit. This is a separate install that puts head unit(s) in specific places. The head unit(s) act sort of like individual window units.

I'd go with window units until it's time to replace the furnace.  Then I'd get central AC.

Mini splits can be good, especially in older homes with radiant heat that don't have ducts, but I think it'd be a shame to install the mini split today and then have your furnace go out tomorrow.
