Wall heat vent stopped working
« on: December 01, 2019, 06:27:50 PM »
Our house has a weird electric heating system that involves a separate thermostat and a vent or two in the wall(s) for each room. The master bedroom thermostat controls both the vent in the bedroom and the vent in the bathroom next door. We rarely use that heating system, so I forgot about a cardboard box I had left pressed up against it when I turned it on. I heard the heat go off after a minute or two, so I went to investigate, noticed the box, moved the box, and turned off the heat. No fire, thank goodness. However...

Now that the vent has cooled down, I turned the heat back on. The vent in the bathroom is working just fine, but the one in the bedroom, which had the box in front of it, still isn't working. Is there some kind of safety switch or something that I need to go looking for to reset or replace? I removed the cover of the vent, and I don't see anything that looks like the obvious culprit.

Last time we managed to get an electrician out here, he knew less than we did about a separate issue in the kitchen, so I really don't want to go down that road again and waste more money. Any DIY advice would be appreciated.

The first thing I’d try is shutting the power off to the heating system and see if that resets it. I wonder if it’s smart enough to store faults and if so, a power reset might clear it.
The next thing I’d try would be to factory reset the heating controller, in case that’s what’s needed to clear the faults.

That worked! Shutting the power off, I mean. Thanks so much for a quick and helpful answer. One mistake at a time, I slowly get better at maintaining/repairing things in my home...
