Car Cost Comparison
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:30:25 PM »
Does anyone know of a website/tool/spreadsheet to compare the total cost of new and used cars? I want to compare all the costs of owning a car - maintenance, fuel, repairs, insurance, etc. KBB has a nice tool for new cars only. Edmunds has a nice site for cars up to 5 years old, but it only goes back 5 years for some models, and it assumes financing and I'm not sure if it's assuming the 5 year old cars are still "new" and if not it is assuming an average number of miles on them.  Consumer Reports has data for their new cars, but I don't have online access so I can't see if they have anything for used cars too.

Does this data even exist? Now that I've been enlightened to the true cost of car ownership, I can't imagine how anyone shops for or buys a car without knowing what it will really cost them!

When I bought I subscribed to consumer reports for 1 month.  It does have used car info, at least for reliability.  I found it to be very accurate- I bought a Ford Focus which had good reports except "Squeaks and creaks" basically body-fit issues that make noises now and then.  (It isn't actually that mustachian, but I had an American-Union-Made only requirement placed upon me by my family.)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
