Homemade Energy Bar Recipes?
« on: May 06, 2012, 01:05:03 PM »
When I am doing active things like riding a bike, I get super hungry, and have always relied on energy bars like Clif bars to keep me going - I imagine I am spending more than is necessary on these (usually $1-$1.25 each), and would love to hear if anyone has found any good recipes to replicate some tasty bars at a drastically reduced cost.. I may be experimenting with this myself, and if I do will post my results here.

I've been making that recipe a lot lately, it's great. I use carob chips instead of chocolate because it's cheaper. For fill, I've tried Trader Joe's orange flavored cranberries, extra carob, and coconut shavings. My favorite so far is the cranberries because the orange goes well with the chocolate.

So it's not a bar, but I take them hiking/canoing/biking and it does the trick for me.

Take a soft tortilla of your choosing and give it a good coating of peanut butter on one side.
Over the peanut butter, drizzle honey.
Top that off with some bran flakes, or some crunchy cereal and you're done.

Roll it up and you have yourself a super tasty, energy-packed snack!

I make these often - quick and easy  (http://enlightenedcooking.blogspot.co.uk/2008/06/homemade-cliff-bars-no-bake.html).

These are also good, and have a lot of different flavour options suggested (http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/chocolate-covered-recipes/fudge-baby-mania/)

I was always fond of an old episode of Good Eats on this particular topic where Alton Brown covered making granola and energy bars called Power Trip.

Recipe list from the episode.
Episode itself, which is quite informative and entertaining.

Granola? Yes. Energy? No, but pretty much anything AB makes is almost assuredly good tasting if the recipe sounds good to your palette.
