Here is the dilemma:
We currently own a 2006 model VW Golf station wagon with 120000km on the odometer (and stick!) it is a good car and suits our family's needs. We bought it new and have been planning to drive it at least another 12 years. It does have a little bit of rust on the hems but nothing serious, and sometimes needs something to be fixed bit on the other hand it is a relatively simply/easy car to fix. Not that my husband has the time to fix it himself but in theory that would be possible.
Now, we have been offered a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid for <3000 euros (the real worth is about 30000) long story. But should we take the hybrid? We have 3 kids who keep growing and this newer car does have a bit more space at the back (not sure as we haven't seen in in reality yet, just pictures). We could get the money to pay for the Mitsubishi if we sold the VW. And we could use the hybrid mostly as a fully electric car if I understand correctly because most of our daily/weekly driving is under 45km. The Mitsubishi hybrid has 45000 km on the odometer.
The anxious part of me is just worked about the durability of the hybrid technology and the cost of repairs of the newer car. Bigger tires, better insurance et cetera.
The price of gas is pretty high wher we live, about 1,65 eur/l and rising for as long as I can remember. Electricity has cost us 7,29 cents/kWh on the coldest winter month, between 6-7 cents on other months, with transfer 3,14cents/kWh and tax 2,8 cents/kWh so that makes about 12-13 c/kWh in total. We are using 100% solar energy.
Both cars apparently use roughly the same amount of gas if the hybrid is not using any electricity, or the hybrid might use a tad bit more.
This is a no-brainer, right...? We do not want to keep 2 cars, and acquiring the hybrid and selling it on is not a possibility.
