Uses for Whiskey You Don't Like
« on: September 04, 2017, 03:16:24 PM »
So, in the spirit of Mustachianism, I purchased a bottle of Kilbeggan Irish whiskey. It isn't too bad, and I realize it is good value for the money. But for me, it just isn't a sipping whiskey. So, other than saving it for hot whiskey and lemon when I have a cold, what else can I do with it to get rid of it?

Light it on fire for a flaming whiskey shot.  That's my preferred use for stuff I just don't like (though if it's a high end whiskey, you'll probably get crucified - I reserve it for Jack Daniels and below).

Fill a shot glass to the top.  Light it on fire (you can do it with a match but it takes a while, a blue flame lighter is a lot faster).  Let it burn for 30 seconds or so.  Blow it out.  Important step!  Consume in one smooth gulp with your lips halfway down the shotglass (to avoid burning them).  It starts out warm and sweet and finishes cool and strong.  It makes something interesting, at least, out of an otherwise not-particularly-drinkable spirit.

Mix it with something you like that masks it enough, so you don't mind the taste.  Ginger Ale?  Watermelon juice (this definitely works with vodka...).

Put it in a jar with one part whiskey, one part apple juice, and a cinnamon stick. Let sit for a few weeks. The alcohol will keep it from spoiling. Enjoy.

When I read the title I thought "well, whiskey milk punch, obviously. That's a terrible use for whiskey."

Re: the flaming shot, it takes long to light because most whiskey is too weak to light readily. You have to heat it first so the vapors are enough to ignite.

Whiskey sours are pretty easy.

Decent whiskey cheap: Four Roses, Old Forester, Evan Williams White Label, McClelland's. Bushmills, Tullamore Dew, and Beam are ok big labels at $20.

Yeah, but the blue flame type lighters make short work of that heating up.

My grandmother was (in)famous for her apple trifle: Start with a layer of crumbled biscuit, sprincle it with a suitable alcohol, add whipped cream and cover with apple sauce. As my grandmother got older, the alcohol played an increasingly larger part in the dish. That could be fine enough, if grandmother cared at all about which type of alcohol she added. She didn't. For her, this was a good excuse to use whatever she had in the cupboard; brandy or cognac tasted quite nice. Danish bitter or aged whiskey on the other hand... that was an acquired taste.

The great grandkids always waited for their parents to taste the desert before they helped themselves. We had secret hand signals to let them know whether it was safe, or if they would get some cookies on the way home instead.

If you bake, homemade vanilla.  Vanilla beans in a jar, cover with whiskey, wait a few weeks

You can make homemade Irish Cream liqueur. There are a lot of recipes out there, and it's easy to make.

Use it in place of amaretto in whipped cream.

This makes an amazing side for desserts.

Failing that, drink the good stuff first then switch to this when you can't taste anymore.

Oh wow--flaming shots! I think I'd be too afraid to try it, but it sounds like it could be fun while I'm whipping up some of the other whiskey suggestions--in desserts and so forth--yum! Thank you, group!

My dad used to use cheap whiskey as anti-freeze for his 80's Mercedes windshield washer. Imagine if he had been pulled over. Not sure if its too good for the rubber hoses, though.

1/2 shot whiskey
1 shot lemon juice
1/2 tsp honey

mix 'em together and you have cough syrup (according to our family).

Offer it on a buy nothing group.  Plenty of people will want to claim it.

This doesn't help you get rid of it now, but any sort of alcohol, even half empty, is always a hit at White elephant gift exchanges.

Whisky and coke is usually okay with cheap whisky

Drown some dried plums or raisins in it for some days or weeks. Then eat it with ice cream or use it inan apple pie.

A lot of good suggestions above.  You could also go simple and mix it with coke.

We make homemade caramels with whiskey or rum instead of vanilla. All you need is a fat, a sugar, and a flavor, which the liquor provides nicely. We give jars of caramels out as homemade christmas and birthday gifts.
In a few other recipes I'm also considering substituting vanilla with other liquors, the flavor comes out great!

Save it for company.

For the win!

Mint julep:  whiskey, simple syrup, and mint leaves.

Irish coffee:  strong coffee, cream, 2 T brown sugar, and 1.5 oz whiskey

I'm not a whisky lover but I do enjoy these two drinks.

Loving these replies--I wouldn't have had any idea!   I normally just drink my whiskey on the rocks--don't mix it, cook with it, etc.

If you like to smoke food use it to make a glaze for chicken or duck or pork.

1 part maple syrup (the real stuff)
1 part dark brown sugar
2 parts whiskey
pinch of cayenne pepper
Reduce over medium heat and glaze the meat half way through the smoke, then again ten minutes before removing the meat from the heat.

Bourbon balls!  But don't store them with other cookies, they smell strongly of whiskey:)

Has anyone mentioned selling the half empty bottle to desperate teenagers for a nice profit?

Not that I'm suggesting you should do that...

Nope, I have all-purpose glassware that cost $2.95 per stem from Crate and Barrel. They stack well in the cupboard and are used by all for everything from milk, juice, and water to beer, wine, and hard liquor. But those pricey glasses are attractive, I'll admit.

I'm still enjoying the ideas--bourbon balls--Of course! Yes, the treat you don't have to share with the grandkids. lol

If you eat red meat, I am very fond of having whiskey-based sauces on steak.
