Title: Used Car Purchase Help
Post by: fxsts12 on May 15, 2014, 09:10:58 PM
On Tuesday my Volvo S60 was totaled, which was paid off with 103K miles and got around 24 mpg. I expect the insurance loss group to want to settle around the 5K price range. I commute 3 - 4 days a week 35 miles each way on a contract work assignment. We also have a Toyota Highlander with a tow hitch so I don't need carrying capacity, however we have a 10 month old and 2 year old so the back seat is always full due to the car seats. I am comfortable with a price range up to $7k and want to get at least close to the 30 mpg and want the engine to have a timing chain instead of belt (since the mileage would most likely make it a necessary maintenance). Based on those 3 criteria I would like to hear from you.

2005 Honda Accord, 4-cylinder. 31 mpg highway. Timing chain. Side airbags (like your S60). Will run for ages.

You're driving a lot of miles. Therefore I'd spend 10-12K and get a used Prius. Right now I drive my wife's former 2001 Subaru Forester -- on the road since July 30, 2000 and getting close to 130K miles. When it dies, I will buy a used Prius.
