I have an 8 yo gateway laptop. works fine for my couple of games and just keeping up with finance but I decided to get serious about learning to code. Tried to install Visual Studio Community and it said my operating system(Vista) was out of date. So should I buy a new computer or try to upgrade this one?

I can order windows 7 for $8 from amazon, but I am not sure why they are so cheap. So a little suspicious not to mention I would still only be at Windows 7. I might could even update to windows 10. Then again....amazing laptops are ridiculously cheap. I am not sure what I should be getting but, I see some amazing specs for under $400. Obviously if I start to get serious about this I will need a new laptop pretty soon anyways.
What do I do?

Coding won't require more than what your laptop provides. You shouldn't even need to upgrade your operating system.
It's probably because you're installing the newest version of Visual Studio that requires at least windows 7. Do you really need visual studio? There are many free editors/compilers that you should be able to download and install on windows vista.
