How much did it cost you to heat your house last winter?
« on: June 27, 2016, 07:01:48 AM »
I took some steps to reduce my heating cost this past winter, and it seems to have worked. My gas bill for the past year is $725. I have a gas water heater that seems to cost $20 a month to run, so my heating cost approximates to $485 for the winter. (I also have a finished attic heated with electric baseboards, but the cost is pretty low - maybe $50 extra in electricity for a season.) This tool says there were 4185 heating degree days in 2015 at my house. So, to normalize it, I spent ($485 + $50)/4185 = $0.13 per HDD this past winter. I have a ~2000 square foot house and steam radiator heat fired with natural gas.

What's your cost per HDD, how do you heat your house, and how big is it?

My gas bill for the winter before this one was $1000. I replaced a leaky door, but I think most importantly, I insulated all of the steam pipes in my basement. This project cost about $200, but it appears to have already paid off.

We paid about $936 for 687 therms  for our heat + hot water + gas stove in 2015 (we also use more electricity when the furnace fan is running, but I figure the HW and stove numbers cancel that out). 4900-some-odd HDD, so $0.19 or 0.14 therms per HDD.

This is for a ~1200 sqft first-floor apartment in a 100-year-old duplex with a forced hot air from a newish furnace and 100-year-old ducts. We're renting and there's a not a lot we can do besides fill in the gaps around the doors with rope caulk and draft stoppers, unfortunately.

About 875$ CAD (500$ for wood, 375$ estimated for the electric furnace backup on busy or very cold days).

A 1800 square foot house + finished basement in Quebec, with the North wind gaining speed off the lake and hitting the front door.

Hopefully within the next few years we'll be able to do the wood ourselves, but, as it stands, it's not a huge priority considering the time required.

I live in a 760 square foot condo and use electric heat and AC.  My grand total bill for the past year was $305.27.  The winter months (January, February, March) bill totaled $94.41 with a monthly average of $31.47.
