Came up in my journal, so asking here to hopefully catch a wider audience. We currently have 250/500 Uninsured motorist coverage. I'm questioning if it is actually worth it to have that. Is Un(der)insured Motorist Coverage worthless (for us)? The reason I ask:
1. We are in a no-fault state, so we have PIP - minor accidents medical expenses covered.
2. We have good health insurance
3. We have good long-term disability coverage
4. We have comprehensive / collision on our cars (though my car is getting to the point we might drop it)
I'm failing to see where UIM coverage is actually going to provide us value - our medical bills will be covered either by PIP or our health insurance. We can cover short term wage loss from savings (or substantially reduced UIM coverage), and we have long-term disability coverage already. Damage to our cars would be covered by our own comp/collision. Seems like the tangible benefit would be limited to the PIP deductibles, comp/collision deductibles, and possible pain-and-suffering? So like 2K + whatever the pain and suffering would be.
Is this actually worth it, or are we just duplicating coverage? It costs ~$200 per year on our current policy.
