Traveling/Vacationing in northern Scotland in June - help!
« on: February 10, 2022, 09:25:07 AM »
Looking for some input from those who have traveled throughout the highlands.  We're planning a trip for June, starting in Inverness.

We are not planning to stop in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Random questions:
Is it worth trying to attend a highland games competition?  Or will it be really crowded and touristy?

Where can we see a sheepdog trial or demo?  (the only one I could find, Leault Farm/Kincraig, appears to be permanently closed)

Best ways to see Loch Ness without taking a boat cruise?  Is Uruquart Castle worth it?

Recommendations on must-sees? (we'll be out on the west coast/Gairloch for a day, in the Loch Ness area for a day, in/near Cairngorms Park for 2-ish days, and driving around the north-east part where the distilleries are for a day)

Recommendations on a really cool place to stay the night that won't break the bank?

We're planning to self-drive the whole thing (no tour company or packages) so I'm torn between cramming everything in and exhausting ourselves driving from one spot to another.

You didn't mention it, but if you're going to the coast, Eilean Donan lets apartments (daily) and a cottage (weekly) with nice views of the castle.

If it's your thing, there a surprising number of small castles with rooms on Airbnb or such, looking to help with the maintenance costs.
