Travel Insurance for a 70+ Traveler
« on: July 17, 2023, 04:36:15 PM »
Hello People That Travel,

I will be going on a trip with a traveler that is over 70.  We would like to purchase insurance for this trip, but I have never purchased travel insurance and now that I have started looking into it, finding insurance for someone over 70 seems even more complicated.  I was just going to go with World Nomads since I have seen the name pop up on the forums before, but the over 70 disqualifies.  And things start to get expensive.  I looked at the "silver nomads" at Trip Assurance, but it seems to have a lot of bells and whistles two retired people don't need.

Any advice?  Good companies?

Details for those that need it:
We will be traveling in Aug 2024.
I will be 42 and she will be 73.
Both from Indiana, USA.
We will be going to Tanzania, 10 days plus 2 for flights.
My biggest concern is medical type coverage while out of network.
Some coverage for trip would be nice since this is an expensive trip.

Thank you in advance,

Loren

Look into IMG and Trawick International for your friend, and/or maybe WorldNomads and SafetyWing for yourself. For such a short trip, you're not looking at a very high premium, probably $100 for your older friend and under $50 for yourself. I subscribe to an annual IMG Patriot plan for myself (65M) but my wife (48) usually goes with SafetyWing on a month-to-month basis. Happy travels.

Thank you for the options.  So many of the ones that come up with a google search are giving $800 quotes for her.  Being able to take some medical only options are really nice.

A good credit card will have built in travel insurance.  Chase Saphire Reserve has all kinds of travel protection.

I'm not familiar with the US market, but locally quite a few of the credit card insurance policies will also have age exclusions.  You have to know exactly what is and is not protected with these sorts of cards (and any policy you take out, TBH).  As a result, a lot of the ones I'm familiar with are not suitable for over 70s anyway.

Thanks for the additional replies.

After checking things out, turns out IMG was the winner, they covered all the holes she was worried about for the trip including the always fun per-existing conditions.  She called them up and talked to an actual person and the nice person answered all her questions.  A real plus in her book.

I'll double check my credit card, as I've never seen anything fancy like that in relation to it when digging in the past (mostly car rental stuff, and other perks I never use).  If not, world nomads for me, which I can't get yet as they don't do 365+ days out.

She really appreciated that I had somewhere I could go and ask a question and get a good answer.  I really appreciate it too.  Thank you.
