Transferred IRA -- Invest it all at once?
« on: May 05, 2015, 08:51:38 AM »
Hello mustachians.  I transferred an IRA (about $300k) from TRowe to Vanguard recently.  It is now sitting in cash in my VG money market account.  I am going to put it into a Target Retirement fund.  My question is -- should I do it all at once now?  A bit at a time?  Wait for bigger market dips?  It feels strange to dump the whole thing into the Vanguard fund with the market so high, but I have read that it is foolish to try to time market dips . . .  Thank you for any advice.

Invest it all now.  I think that madfientist has some explanation on his website, but you stand to make the most money by getting your money into the market as quickly as possible.

If you had left it at T. Rowe Price, would you have been trying to time the market, getting in at lows and getting out on highs? No? Then there is no reason to try to time this particular transaction. From a net worth standpoint, you had 300k invested before, you should have 300k invested after, it doesn't matter that at the earlier point, it was at TRP, and now it's at Vanguard. You had to be out of the market for the short time it took to process the transfer, that's unavoidable, but no reason to extend that.
