Transfer or not?
« on: April 08, 2017, 01:07:38 AM »
Okay, here's the deal. I work for the government, in a prison, the facility I work for is 24 hours and maximum security. We are constantly turning over staff leaving us chronically short staffed and management doesn't help. Also it is about a 45 commute. The worst part is we have to take turns getting "mandated" meaning we are forced to do the next shift if it is not properly staffed.

I am in the process of persueing a transfer. The catch is it is an on-call position meaning that I will only get to pick up time as it is available. However I would keep benefits, hourly pay rate and seniority. This is a minimum security facility meaning a healthier population and it is a 25 minute commute. It is also only day and swing shift.

What would you do?

I guess I should add that I pulled some strings and feel I have it in the bag if I want. I can get by with only 5 shifts per month and have been told by the manager at the new facility that hours shouldn't be an issue.

I was tired when I posted this. I'm going to include some more details. Basically my net worth is 85k and my monthly expenses are 1.2k/month. However I am estimating that when I add a wife, kids and possibly a house in the future expenses could be as high as 50k/month. So the target is 1m right now and I will tune it in as I get closer.

How much is safety an overall concern at the maxi prison? If safety is a major concern I would say the money is more of a moot point.

Also - do you have a wife and or kids in the near future? That stuff takes a lot of time and I wouldn't base your life around that just yet.

I'm sure someone will chime in with more help, but overall I just wanted to thank you for your work as your job can be as dangerous, yet as important as much of the military or police, yet it seems to always be under the radar.

It is a concern, but probably not as much of a concern as an outsider would believe. I am not security, I am with healthcare, my interactions with the inmates are typically pretty brief and while they can be confrontational there is not a ton of face to face time. The officers are at much greater risk. I would classify it as a minor concern.

Of course there is the risk of blood born pathogen exposure but that will be the same at the other facility. This is much more a quality of life discussion to me. Shorter commute, less mandates (I was mandated 3 times in the last two weeks) healthier population of patients, ect.. downfalls being less hours. I know I could survive but my savings rate will be affected until I can get a full time position which could potentially be years.

As for the wife an kids, I expect to get married within the next 2 years (she currently works outside the home and would continue to) and kids in 4-5 years.

That's a tough one, the new job sounds much more appealing but without much certainty in terms of the income you want in order to save up in advance of having kids. I guess it depends how many hours you think you could get. If same income or slight drop probably ok but if you are concerned about a big drop that could be problematic. However since your current place is chronically understaffed, you could probably try the new job and then go back of they can't give you enough hours.

Another thing to consider, depending how much your wife to be makes, the "new" schedule would be FAR better in terms of raising a family and your availability if needed, especially with the wife working outside the home.

I absolutely would make that choice. But then, I kinda already have =) I'm a PRN nurse, for the flexibility and the lack of mandated shifts and for day shift. So I guess, voice from the other side of a similar choice... I'm glad I did!

Good luck with your choice.
