How to pick up dry cleaning on a bike?
« on: May 16, 2014, 11:42:28 AM »
For work from time to time I have to wear a suit. I got it dry cleaned but then to bring it home I would like to use my bike,  but don't know how without folding it and getting creases.

Anyone have any suggestions? I thought maybe I could wear it but wondered if anyone had a better idea.

Just put a coat rack on your kick ass bike trailer :-)

Not sure if this is really the best idea, and it will cost you, but you can get a garment bag pannier. if you will be carrying these sorts of things on your bike often.

If it's a wool suit, the wrinkles usually come out easily in my experience- a little light ironing.

When I've had to take a suit with me, I just wear a backpack that has a little strap at the top. Put the suite in a garment bag (or even just the little plastic shells that many dry cleaners give out for free) and hang on the strap. When you're going it flies out behind you like a little cape for the super hero that you are. Disclaimer is that I'm tall enough and sit upright enough on the bike that it didn't get caught in wheels/chain.

I would carefully fold it into a few folds as possible and put it in a bag.  Usually, the plastic bag around it helps prevent wrinkles and, if you're not going too far, a little short-term folding should not cause deep wrinkles.

My experience camping has been that rolling stuff up is far better than folding it to prevent wrinkles.

I agree with rolling it.  Find a hollow cardboard tube, roll the suit in its suit bag around the tube, then secure the whole package to your rack with a bungee cord.

I can tell you what NOT to do.

I would NOT advise that you, if you are traveling between say, school and home, carry your suit in your left hand, with your right hand on the pedals.  It turns out if you need to brake suddenly (because, for example, your suit bag got caught in the spokes) and brake with your right hand only, it stops the front wheels, sending you over the handlebar.  You might then need to go visit your friends in med school for a consult.

On the other hand, may I say that those plastic suit bags Brooks Brothers send you home from their store with - quite sturdy!  Impressive.  Bag slightly ripped, suit fine.

Hahaha!  Awesome!  This definitely sounds like the way to go.

That is awesome. I think that I want to make a cape!

Rolling works great. Normally I wouldn't both with a tube, but for something expensive to clean, it would help.

Laying it out flat in your cargo trailer, lightly weighted down, could be another way to do it.

I thought about the bike trailer but it's a bit overkill for just a suit. I think that the best solution is to roll up the trousers, and wear the jacket. That way I look good on the way home too ;) (not that wearing a cape wouldn't look good)

Wear it and bike really slowly.

J/k. +1 for taking it off the hanger and rolling it and putting in a big backpack.
